    Re: What are these?

I saw those too. Obviously the seller doesn't know what they are. He just used the only label on them

I think they are some one-off speakers. Maybe a DIY job where someone had the cabs built and finished for him by a cabinet shop or something. I could be wrong though

I think the seller should try to find out a little more info before trying to get such big bucks for them. He probably looked at the Altec horns and saw $$$

    Re: What are these?

From what I can understand he thinks the speaker model number is 811B etc. He also lists the xover part numbers in the description. Thats why I think the listing is for the whole speakers.

I sent him a message asking if he has any more info on them

Nice custom build, ports look interesting.

Most would be better off investing in a decent pair of Model 19's IMOP. those would be great for a frat house party type venue if you could get them for $500. Might burn up a 902 if crossed over at 800hz though.

    Re: What are these?

    The seller sent me this-

I believe I have the original invoices for them. My late uncle was an audiophile who had theses hooked to his Mcintosh system. The cases were built from Altec plans as was the set up. They are remarkable period theater sound speakers that have been well cared for from new.

He also said the auction is for both speakers. I'm trying to figure out what plan these were made after. Maybe a non-Altec plan since the woofers are University

Homebrew ! Don't think Altec would have ever used a University woofer over their own in any speaker... $3G's for 811's Wow I sold mine for a big loss

    Re: What are these?

my guess they did this because the white lettering did not fit in with the styling
Gold, or silver. Let's assume it's a C-15W, they're pretty good actually, they usually had gold lettering.

The cabinets appear to have very exacting fit and finish, somebody put a lot of love into them and at the same time reminded us that we don;t all love the same things.

I have to appreciate the concept, and the execution. As a teenager in the late 70's those would have really floated my boat. Today, i am kind of with magnarc in thinking they're horrendous. They certainly do catch my eye, so doesn't a trainwreck, burning building, or large explosion.
