I also have a set and they do sound great, but as you say may be suited to longer narrower rooms. You may also find them a bit directional depending upon the acoustics of your room. I've used mine with 288b's, 288-16G's and 806A's with an adapter.

I was eventually thinking of using them for mids or mids/highs as rears where I can mount them aiming down from the ceiling at the listening area/couch....

    Re: Altec 203B horns

    Hi,

I'm still using the 203's and remain very happy with them. The 1505's are in the garage. I'd probably sell them if I could figure out how to box and ship them! As before, I'm using 288/16G drivers with Marantz 3 active crossovers, crossing over at 500hz. Those have a 12db/octave slopes and sound better to me than the 6db and 24db crossovers I've tried. I've also tried higher and lower crossover frequencies without any improvement. I don't use tweeters, but then I'm getting old. I've got a couple of little Fostex horns in a box somewhere. I usually sit 15'-20' away from the speakers.

An interesting aside: I consulted with Ted Uzzle a couple of years ago about building a sound room. When I told him about the equipment I was using, the first thing he said was that he hoped I was using single ended tubes on the HF because the combination of 288's and 203's was so efficient I would immediately hear crossover distortion and transistor hash. Luckily I was already doing that. (But unfortunately, I haven't built the sound room yet.)

    Best regards,

    John Stover

    Wow!

    Time marches on.

203B's never made it into the house - still unused in original Altec boxes. Still married.

Anyone interested in buying what may be the last pair of Altec 203B's still unused in original boxes on the planet?

I am really hal333 but the system wouldn't let me back in. If I can go back to being hal333 that would be good but entirely optional.
