Hi Phil,
Good question. I will tell you why:
The VERY best possible sound one will EVER get out of an ALTEC speaker, for home use, will be a very simple system that is well executed.
Simple is NEVER a bi-amp !!! EVER.
As soon as you add an electronic crossover, you add an extra LINE stage, extra wiring, extra amps ( to signal - drive ) into the system. Furthermore, and most important, EVERY person I see, commonly MIS IMPLEMENTS how to use that active biamp crossover.
For best possible sound, audio amps should have no negative feedback loops, If using two amplifiers ( stereo ) to biamp an ALTEC speaker, BOTH amps must highest quality and be EXACTLY the same.
There are only two commercial amps I am personally aware of, ( other, perhaps, than what I might possibly DIY build ) , that get the most possible on ALTEC speakers. Neither is inexpensive !! Offend you? Sorry, Wake Up !!
With all amps in a biamp EXACTLY the same, there is a consistent timing constant, and signature through the speaker.
The REAL problem is not too much the ALTEC speaker, its that MOST amps in audio don't cut the mustard.
I say, if someone can't hear the difference, between a solid state amp on the bottom, and a tube amp on the top, they have an ANTI TRANSPARENT mid-fidelity audio system, and its likely poorly / sub optimally wired. Its a waste of the speaker !! And, of ones time and life.
These new GTO caps are a NATURAL as part of a bypass bundle, in critical C locations in a passive speaker crossover. Just what the speaker needs !!
We all never had these before in the HISTORY of Electronics. 1.3 mOhm ESR at 100 khZ, but FAR more important, in my amateur opinion, 1,500 Amperes, Instantaneous Peak !!
My GTOs also do WONDERS when intelligently applied inside any good SET amp - in my actual experience.
GM is a really great guy, and I respect him, but there is NO NEED to " theorize" as to what these caps can do..... and IF they are even needed. Just install and listen, it will put a smile on a person's face, and no GM, it is NOT a tone control as you "imagine" and " have not heard ". It is more like a reality control. "Oh,....... it sounds REAL to me now " !!
This is written by me for any and all of the people up here, who are capable to have an open mind. And posted with the best of intentions. Surely, some will get this discussion, about a newly-available part.
Bill Wojo, your post was a lot better. Thanks!! Are you still listening to the two-stage SE amp? Haven't heard any update. Nor a response on me helping you build a really good sounding one! Regards,
Jeff Medwin

Yet another
Opinion,
Without valid,

the Jung/Marsh cap article,
mention the advantage of
the use of higher voltage rated caps,
higher current makes sense as well.
'altho geometry,
should be taken in to account,
as geometry makes a large difference ,
in everything,
whether this is understood or not.

I take it you failed math?
Adding an active crossover deletes the passive one, so the added stage argument is ridiculous.
As I said, I was sure there was an audiophool reason not to use them.
And if everyone you've seen misimplemented the actives, get out more. There ARE competent people in the world.
Re: OT, ....New Capaciitor Type.............. for AUDIO Use.
bet Bob Carver could duplicate the performance of those caps using only a paperclip, some chewing gum, aluminum foil, and the cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper.
Re: OT, ....New Capaciitor Type.............. for AUDIO Use.
Yes, they are called "audiophools" for a reason. Lol.
My uncle is into vintage guitars. He says they have a similar type person in the guitar world called a "tone chaser". Those are the guys I can sell my old, high esr caps to for big bucks.
Btw, Phil,
You can send me your DCX2496 for proper disposal. :D
But seriously, we are all Altec lovers here

Big whoop :p Just noticed you've been way more active in a shorter time period, a much more relevant way of the two to keep 'score' to my way of thinking. :Thumbs up:

Threw the smiley on there to show I wasn't serious...I just happened to notice the statistic while editing.
Never realized that many unregistered people reading the board till then.

It does turn out after a conversation with two manufacturers that these are NOT called gate turn off capacitors. There is no such thing.
They are designed to be used in conjunction with Gate turn off thyristors, of which there is such and animal. Hence the GTO designation.
From the literature:
http://www.hostboard.com/forums/hbmc...2017/07/23.jpg
GTO caps come in MKP types, which are just heavy duty polypropylene caps. They also do come in PIO caps. Several manufacturers make them.
But according to the manufacturer they are not any sort of new capacitor type at all. Other than their duty ratings they are just caps.
If the only concern is voltage rating, look at the oil impregnated snubber caps...in 4500 and 6000 volt ratings.
Sorry to dispel the magic, but they are just caps. And why you guys are buying them at that price is you are getting MKP polypropylene caps not the PIO which are the expensive ones, You are paying pretty much standard price for those caps.
