I had a discussion with someone that says the 1590 E frequency response didn't go as high as 20KHZ . I know they produced it till they closed up shop . In the early 80's came the 9442A 9444B 9446A These were outstanding for cinema better than QSC not as good as 'Mcintosh who can afford them .

He is correct. The 1590E rolls off at both the top and bottom of the audio range. They can be modified to remove that.

But for the effort, a 9444A is a much better bet.

The old tube amps are worth modding. The solid state ones, modding cost is more than the value of the result.

so whats the scoop on the 9444As I have a pair and I'm almost ready to give them away. but to be fair i really haven't done any A and B testing.
i bought a few Ashly 2001 amps, and i love the way they sound. Has anyone here done a side by side sound off between them? what kind of transistors do the 9444As use?

I'm not going to be one to knock Ashly amps.
Basically, IMHO they and the 9444A are in the same class sonically

The 9444A has excellent circuitry. Let your ears be the judge..

The 9444A has the bigger caps and more 'grunt'. The 9444B, AFAIK was what EV got to and 'cheapened'.......

I think Altec was under pressure to produce a cheaper amp. They basically cloned a QSC. A 9444B is a QSC 1400 in drag.

Not a terrible amp, I have heard much worse. But nothing special.

    Agree Old Guy.

I have 9444As. Love them. Work great on A6.
