I think tech has improved. But much of it is spent on making mediocre acts sound better.
If the music's not there tech can't put it there.
As far as recording, I have 192 kHz gear. I'm not gonna trade it for tape. But CD's are downsampled to 44.1 kHz, basically lossy compression of the file. Much detail is lost.

so what DAC are you using? i have a nice Sony blu ray player that has a great output. i guess i could just burn dvd audio discs in a pinch. Regular Cds sound really good. but,,, now i have to find 24/192 files.
could i run through my behringer ultra curve?

Yeah, BD and especially 4K, movie soundtracks can be incredible, though limited to +20 dB and there's a few pipe organ symphony CDs with [clipped] +30 dB [that's 1 kW less speaker system efficiency], but based on numerous folks at the DIY audio testing how much power they use combined with some pros's comments WRT current mix downs, most music is so compressed there's only barely audible dynamics [<5 dB], so basically FM radio at best, i.e. no way to tell if it's 'live or is it Memorex'.
Although, I've been told that a surprising number of live events is just as compressed, so for other than 'loud', not much point musically related to suffer the crowds, cost, etc..
