    You're welcome!

Not likely, last PM was 5.26.12

If you'd asked 60 yrs ago, yes, nowadays all I know is that the various dbx systems I've had plus based on Christmas Holidays 2019 ~ all day audition it's still the best bang/buck system I've been exposed to.

Well, we can hope the best for him then.

On that crossover topic - (please know that I'm very green behind the ears on this stuff) - is the rule of active crossovers wired in before amplification a "hard & fast" rule? If so, could you explain that to me...?

    Thanks much,
    -Brandon

Right, at signal level the components can be tiny due to only having to pass low voltage, current to the amp's input Vs a passive XO's power amp output: Signal Processing Fundamentals

Re: Altec A7 500-8 and Altec 1224A electronic crossovers

GM, thanks. I'll get read up on that - thank you for sharing. I was thinking of going with actives until I could possibly settle on a frequency and then try my hand at building my own passives.

Budget wise I might do as per old guy: buy the single N501-8A that I'm short, eventually get an amp then a dsp/active eventually and if I get along with things then maybe a second amp to bi- amp with.

Does running less watts to the HF compared to the LF aid in balancing the two at all?

    Thanks,
    -Brandon

Edit: I'm certain one of my 416-8A's has a separation of ~2" at the cone surround joint...? If that's what you'd call it. If I'm looking at dropping it off at GPA for the works, I might as well do both. Will probably be doing this firstly then perhaps acquiring the missing x-over.

I got to check out this place yesterday with the current owner and picked up a Rane AC 23 crossover for $20. Maybe it'll work...

    Still hunting amps.

EDIT: In other news: turns out a family friend here in OKC had a brother that worked at Altec for years, anyway he passed on a few years back (RIP, never had the pleasure of meeting) and our friend, the younger brother, ended up with all of his gear. I've an appointment this afternoon to visit him and look through the gear. I'm excited a bit, yet have no idea what to expect.

    You're welcome!

Well, it's a matter of the need to shelve down the HF horn's higher efficiency, which in turn lowers the amount of peak power required relative to the bass cab.

A very good plan regardless of brand/model, especially in this case since these are extremely wide range woofers with different doping material thanks to EPA and maybe other [detail] differences between then and now that can affect the driver's response.

I wish I could post pics here easily.

Well, I think one 416-8A is functioning fine, but what do I know...?
    Not much.

The other sounds good too, but I heard some rattling from it. Thought it was the cabinet for a minute, then following my ear around the cab- and pressing on things and what not, ended up at a tear in the lower portion of one 416-8A that was barely visible. And that's where I concluded the search - why go further at that point?

i've used fingernail hardener, for really small holes/tears.

    doesn't take much.

my mom actually gave me a bottle of the same,

though it dried out in less than 10 years ....

There are many companies involved in electronics design. I think that this is a fairly popular branch, because people like not only the internal characteristics, but also the appearance of the gadget, whatever it is.
Check tronicszone is an electronic product design company that has been doing this for a very long time and has a lot of feedback. So you can contact them and you won't regret it.
