Hi I have Altec A5s with 1505b horn (299 comp.driver). I use either Altec 515-8g (great resolution but not much under c.a. 55- 60hz) or GPA 515c ( better bass but still not much under c.a. 50hz and generally a slightly darker sound). I would like to reinforce the bottom end somewhat. I aquired a pair of JBL 2242Hs in great shape and was thinking of running the A5s with no lowpass filter on the 515s (i.e. the A5s with normal crossovers without filtering out the bottom end, let the 515 in the A5s fall off naturally - hope you understand) and try to blend in the 2242s ( in ca 8cuft reflex boxes) via digital active xower and some digital eq ( initially using minidisp). Has anybody tried similar, and do you think this is a worthwhile experiment. I have read so many accounts of the difficulty blending in a sub with the A5s. Im not looking for extremely deep bass but a more solid representation down to c.a 35hz.

Nice speakers Phil-G did you build the 828 cabs ?
My 828 cabs are quite rustic ( where used in a movie theater and then by a disc jokey), need to fix the up nicely one day. Does the sub blend in well at 80hz? I somehow got the notion in my head that I either had to cross lower ( i.e. where the 515/828 combo starts to fall off naturally ) or higher ( to meet the 828 front horns). But I will try different possibilities with minidsp and possibly go for a better quality active xover later.

Sorry for not getting back.
The 828s are scratch built. Somewhere here is a build thread.
the crossover is set at 80 and 1100. So the sub runs up to 80. the 828s cover from 80 to 1100. And the 288s cover 1100 on up.
i have 515GHPs the 828s and 3154s in the sub/s.
i added a stencil to the sub. it just needed something.
I'm thinking about replacing the 828s and horns with these little speakers they put out an amazing amount of clear sound.
Thanks for the info. I cross over around 500hz where the 299s in the 1505b take over. I use my A5 mostly as two-way although I have a pair of JBL075s that I can use to fill in the top.
