    418 / 418B Question

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Altec 418 and 418B 15" guitar speakers? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Re: 418 / 418B Question

I'm not sure it's as clear cut as A, B, C, etc. Altec often made incremental changes. And older and newer models can have either frame.

Generally, as amps got bigger, changes were made, mostly to increase power handling.

I would look more at date codes. I suspect the best sounding 418's would be pre-1974. But then again, often they can have replaced cones. Guitar speakers get blown up a lot.

Thanks. The date code for my 418 is 391221, which I believe is 1962 and appears to be all original.

Thanks. The 1972 catalog I saw didn't include the 418, it only listed the 418B and 418-8H.
