Unorthodoz use of 806A?

My local DIY specialist made a suggestion concerning my 806As. He suggested that I remove them from the 811B horn (leave the horn in the cabinet), take the back cover off the 806As, turn them around, sit them on top of my cabinet (846A Flamenco), reverse the phase (i.e., wires), and use them as dome-style drivers. He said I could time align them as well this way.

Thoughts?

There's a guy here in Vancouver that makes and sells a line of electronics. He uses 288's with the horn, back cover and loading cap removed and the diaphragm facing forward. They sound OK for a dome tweeter/mid. You don't get the compression driver sound or the efficiency boost from horn loading.

Does this make any sense to you? If it does, than you should try it. Notice that you will have a nice wide response dip above crossover (when the horn would normally load the compression driver),and the diaphragm by itself won't match the output of the woofer. The diaphragm is expensive and you probably will ruin it. You will still need a midrange driver, because this suggestion will only work as a super tweeter - and not that super!

Thanks Richard. I don't know enough to make sense of it but it didn't seem like sound advice. So, I posted here and confirmed my suspicion. I'd never heard or read of such a mod/tweak until today. But, I had to follow up.

You still would need a midrange source, and I just feel the 806 diaphragm wouldn't put out enough to make it worthwhile. It seems that there are plenty of tweeters out there that are more suited to this duty. How about one of those JBL "baby cheeks" units? Cost is the only downside.

Your DIY person must not like "the horn sound".
