I'm not an electrician and I don't have a copy of the code.

I'm planning a detached garage 30'-0" away from the main house in Vancouver, B.C.. I will have an electrician do all of the electrical work with a permit, but plan to do the monkey labour. Digging pulling wire etc.

Right now I'm trying to determine what is feasable.

I'm hoping to provide general lighting and at least two circuits to the garage. 5 circuits one of which being a GFCI would be ideal.

    1) What do I need on my main panel to provide this in the garage?

I'm assuming that a 10/3 from the main panel to the sub panel in an approved under ground conduit is acceptable over 30'-0" distance.

    2) What type of conduit should be used and how deep does it have to be? (hardpan is at 18")

    3) How close to the property line, sanitary lines or storm lines can it be?

    4) What protection or warnings are required?

Several years ago a 10/3 was fed from the main panel through the wall to an exterior outlet in preparation for the garage.

    5) What are the requirements for leaving the house and entering the garage, goose neck or exterior junction box?

    6) Will the garage need to be grounded separately?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, hope some one can help me.

    Hello Ian,
Do you have an electrician in mind? Maybe it would be best to discuss and plan this with him?
