Derailed B.C. train leaking corrosive acid

    CBC News
Several cars of a CP Rail train went off the tracks early Wednesday near the town of Golden in southeastern B.C. and a company official says one of the cars is apparently leaking hydrochloric acid.

    (CBC)
Ed Greenberg, a CP Rail official, told the Canadian Press there is no public health risk.

However, school officials have cancelled classes in the area as a precaution.

Kyle Hale, emergency program co-ordinator, told CBC News that no evacuation has been ordered for Golden but officials were trying to reach the area by rail because there is no road access into the area where the derailment occurred.

"At this point they're trying to go in by rail. No one has been evacuated. We're planning for that contingency should the need arise," he said.

The cars from an eastbound freight train derailed about five kilometres east of Golden in Kicking Horse Canyon. One was carrying lumber while others were tankers carrying the sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. The tanker carrying sodium hydroxide did not leak, according to Greenberg.

Officials want to make sure that any liquid that may have spilled does not reach a tributary of the Kicking Horse River.
