Witchcraft predates Christianity and most of the other modern religions today, but Wicca was born during the last century.

The pentacle is an upright five pointed star surrounded by a circle. In some traditions this would signify a first degree or first year witch.

The pentagram was originally a symbol used to signify a second degree or second year witch within a coven. It wasn't viewed in a negative way until the church of Satan adopted it when the satanic movement was born.

Contrary to popular belief, witchcraft is not related to satanism in anyway. Satan is a Christian concept, and since witchcraft doesn't recognize the existence of either a Christian god nor a devil, it seems kind of silly to assume that witches would spend valuable time trying to worship something that doesn't exist, doesn't it?
