if someone moves into a country, it should only make sense that they learn the language. I believe in the idea that America is a cultural smelting pot, i mean where else can you get a resturant that sells tacos and fried chicken in the same place....or where you can choose between fajitas, a nice thick steak, or a nice dish of pasta.

what i'm saying is this....i dont' appreciate the fact that all the packages (well, most) at the local store have dual packaging on it, one side is in english, the other is in spanish. another thing that gets me...i was watching the local news (you will learn more in my next post) and the audio suddenly changes...saying that my tv was running on the secondary audio setting, if i wanted to continue to listenting to this channel in english, i had to change the audio settings on my TV....WHAT!?!?!??! this is my tv...in an english speaking country, and i have to change my settings so i can understand what is being said? if i wanted my news in spanish, i would get satellite and watch the spanish channels.

i understand most people say...well, if you went to another country, you would want them to speak your language. i must say, this would make things nice...but i would understand that i'm not at home anymore, i have to adapt. because of this, i would obviously plan a vacation around that fact.

i don't know if i got my point across or not, so..in summary...The United States of America is an English speaking country. The citizens of this country should be able to speak English, i can "almost" accept broken english....

weren't you just pissin' and moanin' cuz you have
to 'share' your country with immigrants that
refuse to learn english well enough to avoid
    special (extraneous) treatment?

    my only suggestion is.....

yes....that was wrong of us, we were wrong....BUT, we gave them land...what else can us white folk do? pay resitution to them, like we are expected to do to african americans for the rest of our lives? (that is of course, said with loads of sarcasm)

i had nothing to do with the native americans getting run off and/or killed. i'm sorry that happened, i really am. I had relatives that were part of the trail of tears (it was several generations back...obviously, but i have blood that was on that trek....). but...survival of the fittest (and no, i'm not talking about the evolutionary version of that theory)...

A lot of this is common sense economics.

I live in an area that is 50% hispanic. So,depending on what kind of business you have it pays to have bilingual workers.

Basically there is enough Mexican run businesses here that the Mexicans dont really have to learn to speak english.

Learning a new language is hard,so if you dont have to,or can get around it most Mexicans will.

know and find comfort in this, dj....

sure your pre-packaged meat from kroger will
have a label showing both english and spanish on
it, but somewhere in the world right now...
we americans are forcing some other culture content
in their own ways to bow to our whim or else

    :-"

Well we southern-hemispherers get our fair share of crappy-english speakers too.. Working at a university bookshop, you are faced with trying to understand what goddamn course they are doing so you can find their books.. It is hard, but you can't help but put yourself in their position, thinking it must be 10x worse for them
