Little Rock Lawyer Launches Pro Basketball Team
    By Arkansas Business staff
    Arkansasbusiness.com Daily Report - 3/11/05 11:55:00 AM

A Little Rock attorney on Friday unveiled what would be the state's second professional basketball team.

Woodson D. Walker was scheduled to announce his World Basketball Association franchise, the Arkansas ArchAngels, at the Clinton Presidential Library at noon. The group was set to announce its playing schedule and coach.

The team would be the second professional basketball team in Arkansas. The Arkansas RimRockers, which recently ended its first regular season, plays at Alltel Arena in Little Rock. The Continental Basketball Association franchise is owned by Larry Crain Sr., who also owns automobile dealerships and radio stations.

Walker has operated his own summer basketball program and a semiprofessional exhibition team that plays college basketball in the fall.

"Owning a professional basketball franchise is a natural extension of my involvement in the sport and my love for it," Walker said.

The WBA season runs from April through June, with playoffs the first week of July. The team has not announced where it will play. Team tryouts are scheduled for March 18-20 at McClellan High School in Little Rock. The team is scheduled to play 30 games, 15 at home. Its first game is a home game scheduled for April 23 against the Jackson Rage of Jackson, Miss.

The team has a Web site at http://www.littlerockwba.com.

The WBA is about to begin its second season. The league was founded last year by its president, Leroy McMath. The league says it goal is "to teach, develop and expose players to the NBA, NBDL, CBA and International scouts, while bringing the excitement and fun of professional sports to towns across the U.S." The group began last year with seven teams. This season it has 12 in cities such as Tunica, Miss.; Macon, Ga.; Cleveland, Tenn.; and Raleigh, N.C.

Walker's advisory board includes "Broadway Joe" Booker, program director for KPIR-FM, Power 92; former Razorback Marvin Delph; Henry Forest, state president of AAU Boys Basketball; Johnny Johnson, athletic director for the Little Rock School District; Sherman Tate, a vice president at Alltel Corp. of Little Rock; and Rex Nelson, director of communications for Gov. Huckabee.
