In Need of horn driver advice

I was wondering What is the diference between the two, because I have the 807's (8 ohns)and I heard a set of the 806's in 16 ohms and the sound was not comparable. the 806's sounded very smooth, while my 807's are hit or miss. both systems were powered by mcintosh 250's, and had 511b horns. Also could I buy radian 806 diaphrams and put them in the 807 case, as a fix. thank you for you help

I believe all the 807 drivers came with Symbiotik diaphragms - and most folks think those don't sound nearly as good as the aluminum diaphragms used in Altec's other drivers.

I wound up with a pair of 807's a while back and sent them to Bill at Great Plains Audio and had the aluminum diaphragms installed and the magnets re-magged. They sound as good (to my ears) as the 802's Bill also did for me.

I also have a set of original 802's with the 16 ohm diaphragms in them - I bought them in 1971. I may be hallucinating, but they seem ever-so-slightly smoother or "sweeter". I'm warring with myself over whether or not to switch them to 8 ohm diaphragms. I'm driving my stuff with all solid state amps, so I doubt the impedance difference with the amp is the main contributor - but I'm not an engineer, so I really don't know.

Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable and wiser members will weigh in on the difference in sound between the original 16 ohm diaphragms and new 8 ohm ones from GPA. In any event, the GPA diaphragms are simply excellent IMHO.

Thanks for the info. I know what you are talking about the 16 ohm drivers I've listen to a pair of 806's in 16 ohm and they sound like no other. I wonder if Bill has any of the 16 ohm diaphragms to put in the driver?
