whats the diff? whats the advantage of the J&S unit over the stock knock sensor?
I know J&S retards on a cylinder per cylinder basis whereas the OE sensor retards ALL 4 when i senses knock.. but what else is different??
it is more sensitive or soemthing?

I heard that John, of J&S, stated that you could tap into the existing knock sensor instead of using the supplied sensor if you couldn't find a mounting spot. The factory ECU has so many parameters to deal with that its not as fast as a stand alone unit for knock detection.

The biggest difference is the Safeguard works, and the stock one doesn't.
Proof of this is simply to install it, WITHOUT changing timing, and watch the J&S pick up very mild pinging in the midrange. If you raise your timing, then run the J&S properly, then remove the J&S (turn it off), you'll hear the detonation a lot, and wonder if the OE knock sensor really works.
The Safeguard has a dedicated digital processor to listen to it, the stock sensor only retards after it get's really bad, and the damage has occured.

If you do replace the stock knock sensor with the J&S unit, would you just simply disconnect it and the ecm will not freak out?

No the Safeguard sensor goes into the block wherever you can put it. There are a couple of places I know it fits. In back, below the oil separator box, and in front near the exhaust manifold.
The stock ECU is so slow it won't ever detect ping, the safeguard will beat it to it everytime. The unit is VERY cool, very nice.

I thought of doing the same thing. However lots of luck getting to it. On my civic it's buried under the manifold near #2 cylinder.
