A woman came in today to return an action figure she'd purchased back in october (the 9th, to be exact).
Now, we have a 30 day return policy on new, unopened merchandise, as long as you have the receipt. and this figure was new, and unopened, and she had the receipt..but it had certainly been longer than 30 days.
Her reason for returning it was that the figure was broken, and had been since she bought it, but hadn't noticed it until now. It was one of the sports pick NFL figures, and it certainly was broken. Its arm had fallen off in the package, and was rattling around loose in there. Most of the fingers had broken off of the hand/arm that was still attached, leaving a grand total of one intact finger on that hand. Big smears of paint from the figure were on the inside of the package, which we all know does happen from time to time during shipping, but these were so big they had clearly gotten there from the package being dropped or kicked.
I looked at the figure, looked at the receipt, and said "No, I'm sorry, I cannot return this for you. It's long past the 30 day return period."
The woman starts complaining about how it was a gift, how she hadn't noticed it was broken (how could you NOT notice damage to that extent? The fucking thing rattled when you picked it up! Fingers were littering the bottom of the package! No employee would have sold it to her in that condition), ect..ect. I stood my ground and told her "No."
She kept complaining, so I went and got the assistant manager from the back room. Unfortunately, he ended up doing the return for her. Had it been up to me, no way in hell would she have gotten that return. The figure would never have left our store in that condition. She claimed it had "just been in storage". The assistant manager asked if it had been in a storage space where people were kicking it, because that's what it looked like.
Her story also changed from it being "in a bag in the closet" to "boxed up in the basement".
this, folks, is one of the reasons why I hate gamestop. the friggin people taking advantage of us. the sports pick collectors can be the worst.
I also had a customer take my name and the district manager's number down so she can report me cause I wouldn't let her kid use the employee only bathroom that's located in our back stockroom..and thus very much off-limits to the customer.
