It's the history, quality, fantasy, childhood memories, and feeling that you have a friend in your dolls. I know it sounds corny but that's what it's like for me.

That's true! I look at other dolls and think, "It's not the same" there is nothing comparable to them! I feel so attatched to them as if they were real! And other dolls are just dolls. But AG are apart of my family!
The believeablitity of their stories is what does it for me. And of course the historical aspect.
It's the characters that come to life from the books! How many characters become alive from a book? not many. Anything that will help children love to read and use their imagination without Gameboys and CDbooks is in my book!!!
As a teacher I love how the dolls get children interested in the characters, the era and lifestyle of that character.
If American Girl had existed when I was young, I would be more addicted than I am now. It's the books that are the kicker for me. Dolls are cool, but dolls with BOOKS... man, it's a dream come true!!!
I think it is the story that comes with them.My DD is only five so she cannot read,I have read the stories to her,and I enjoy them as much as she does. And usually we will read the whole book in one sitting, she does not want me to stop and I don't either.
I would agree it's the stories. Rachel and I are Reading Josefina's for the first time and I found my self dreaming of her last night!
I did the same thing after reading Sam's stories. I have played out in my head Sam and Nellie's adventures right until they get married!! Crazy I know. My husband thinks I'm nuts and my daughter loves to hear the adventures of the girls that I make up. Someday I will finish writing it all down!
Boy I wish i had had a doll when i was young!
I have to add that even for the AGTs its the stories!!! My daughters have characters and stories writtten up for their dolls even before they get them. They are real to them. (And are making it SO easy to get them to write and research history.)
For me - I can't really figure it out - and hope I won't have to pay some therapist thousands of dollars some day to help me figure out why I've spent SO much on dolls - but each doll (even the AGTs) has a lot of meaning to me - they are characters I can relate to with real issues and events in their lives that aren't "softened" (can't think of the right word) for kids - death, financial insecurity - Dad losing job, war, love, moving, loneliness, abduction, figuring out friendships, etc. There's a lot of strength and courage and good wisdom in the books.
The AGTs I have often are an extension of myself or my history or someone I know. Don't know what that's about psychologically but it must be working 'cause I'm doing OK.
I have to agree that the books make alot of the diffrence. You really get to know them. But I think it's also the quality of the clothing and accessories. And there's just something about those little faces....
