So, just had a hugely long conversation with customer service because I now have two early Addys with silver eye and really want to get this fixed. But I had heard that they couldn't just do Addy's eyes and would have to give her a new head. CS rep was fantastic and took tons of time and asked a supervisor, who said that fixing Addy's eyes only would not be a problem. They said if I enclose a note that ONLY her eye was to be replaced, it wouldn't be a problem. We'll see- I'll be enclosing my phone # with instructions to absolutely not switch heads. Especially since one is tagged 1986 W. Germany on the clothes.
Interesting conversation though. She didn't at first think the old German dolls had different faces than the ones now, but I assured her I have compared Kirsten, Samantha, Molly, Addy, and Felicity and the current ones all do differ from the early German dolls. She then said perhaps that was because the German-made dolls were made by Gotz before AG had their own factory, but once AG switched to China (in 1993) and got their own factory, the faces might have changed slightly to differentiate them from Gotz. Interesting thoughts...
I have a 1993 China tagged Addy and a 1986 W. German tagged Addy, and they are a little different- eyelashes, slightly different color and face shape, German doll has slightly lighter eyes and slightly different hair. Both are different from Mattel Addys. The mystery of the changing dolls continues...

Horsemom, thanks for the info.
I have German made Addy that I purchased in '93 or '94 and my DD has the Mattel made Addy that we bought her for Xmas, and they definitely are different.
My DD's face looks smaller than mine, she has less hair than my Addy, and her eyes are darker.

I just had the silver eye fixed on my 90 W. German Addy doll. I was also very specific about not getting the head changed, and that I wanted to keep the doll as close to original as I could. Not only did they do a wonderful job on the eyes, but they also styled her hair back to its original style for me (I'm a purist). I could not have been happier! I really love my AG dolls but am equally interested to read about the history of Pleasant Rowland's great company. The first doll I ordered directly from AG/Pleasant Company was Felicity in November 1999. She has a hang tag that indicates "doll made in Germany". Her meet outfit is tagged China. I'm trusting that the information supplied on that tag is correct. Addy was introduced in 1993. I think I read somewhere that for a time the dark skinned dolls were being produced in Germany because the means to manufacture that vinyl was located there. Might that have been in one of the Gotz factories? Maybe some production continued in Germany after 1993?
Also, in July 2000 on our first visit to AG Place Chicago I chose Josephina. The tag that came attached to her wrist states doll made in Germany. Clothes are tagged made in China.

Oops, you are right, my Addy is from late '92, which was her release year. My Sam doll is from 90 I'm not sure exactly what the history of the doll manufacturing is, but it would be interesting to know. Maybe something to research while I'm hanging around at home...

It also used to be on the AG website as "About Pleasant Company" under Company Profile. That may have changed with the involvement of Mattel.

Thanks for the encouragement, abz! I'll be without Addy for awhile but at least she'll come back good as new!
Thought I'd also add... the customer service rep, when I said I was an adult collector said, "I don't think I'd qualify as a collector, but I love my girls and play with them shamelessly!" I thought it was so great- she has several AGs herself and said she just loves them and plays with them all the time. I said, "You know, there's this message board..."

Horsemom, I did the same thing!!
When I went to AG on Marisol's release date, the lady helping me was so nice. I had my OOAK Kimberly with me, and she carried Kim all over the store while gathering my items for me. She said that she and her GD had several AGs, and was so interested in hearing everything I thought I knew about AG. I invited her to the board, but I haven't seen her here yet. Maybe she's lurking. I hope so.
