Another interesting article about American Girl...this one the community of Pilsen is upset over the way they are portrayed in Marisol's book. They say the community is not dangerous as written in the book and are unhappy it is presented that way.
Pilsen's not good enough for new American Girl?
I haven't read Marisol's book so I'm interested to hear from those who have what they think about this.

They lie!!!! Sorry the truth hurts. I live in Chicago, and I feel that the book sugar coated a lot of it.

Hey, I grew up in Cleveland, and we've always been the butt of jokes on TV all the time, so I learned to have a thick skin about those things a LONG time ago! And yes, I now live in a suburb because our Cleveland schools are horrible!

I don't remember the book saying the neighborhood was really bad. Like most children's books, it is very gently put.
-
Maybe they don't consider their neighbourhood "dangerous" because they're just used to it and consider it standard?
Someone moving from a tiny town into Vienna might consider it a dangerous place, although it's proven to be one of the safest capital's in the world. Or for example some parts of London aren't considered safe areas either, and I'd never walk there by myself at night. Other areas I never worried about, no matter what time of night.

It was during the daytime, but when we were in NYC I actually felt safer than I do in downtown Cleveland. We split up for a point and I walked to AG by myself. My girlfriend later yelled at me saying "you did that in NYC! I wouldn't do that in Cleveland, and I said you're right, I wouldn't either!"

I think people just want to have something to complain about. People have been moving out of cities to the suburbs for a long time now. My parents did it when I was about to enter school. It's just a lifestyle choice.

People always have to complain about something!!! It's rediculous, can't they just stay out of it? Are they AG collectors, highly unlikely! And besides, I've lived in big cities before and it ain't pretty! I wouldn't walk by myself...well, I'm just pariniod...but still! They need to get over it!

LOL! I'm hardly offended and, if anyone has a right to be, it's me. Here are the crime stats for Pilsen, the community in question (higher scores mean a higher risk for that type of activity)...
Violent crime risk: 8.0
Property crime risk: 6.0
Now here's my neighborhood:
Violent crime risk: 7.0
Property crime risk: 6.0
BTW, the national average is as follows:
Violent crime risk: 3.0
Property crime risk: 3.2
Moral of the story: Living in the city has its advantages, but it's certainly not as safe as living in the 'burbs. To assume otherwise is sheer folly.

LOL, maybe they should have just used a "pretend" suburb.
On a side note, I didn't know Marisol moved to Des Plaines. That's cute. I was born near there and that's where my parents and I used to live before moving to MI. hehe. (must...not...fall in love with Marisol... banking account couldn't handle that...)
