OK.. I want to use some clips from the official Swordfish (2001) trailer in one of my shorts. When I try to import the file in Premiere, it crashes. So I try to convert it to some other format using Sorenson Squeeze 4.0, but the program tells me:

"unable to add the source file(s). The following file(s) are copyrighted"

What can I do?
I'm not planning to sell this movie, it's nothing like that. I want technological answers, not legal

Yes, I HAVE been looking all over web for another version of the trailer.

Yay! I solved it. Converted it to mpg with WinAVI Video Converter

I'm guessing that since QuickTime is a proprietary format... there's probably a simple flag in the encoding that says "copyrighted".

So applications that can import QuickTime files will recognise this flag, and not allow you to edit it.

When you converted to MPEG, it would lose that flag... hence making it an 'editable' file.

Yeah, and I guess Sorenson has to be faithful to Apple/QuickTime and comply with their restrictions.

Hmmm... that's odd. One of the projects we had to do at college was to a music video using sourced footage and I know someone who used a fair portion of Swordfish in their's.

Have you tried using a different DVD player to capture with?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The file I'm talking about is the trailer from the official web site!

Of course, if I had the DVD I could rip the trailer and it would probably work.
