Yoshi's is actually in Oakland not Los Angeles.
It's the best Jazz venue I've been to in CA by far. Raised stage and not a bad seat in the house, plus great sushi.
I might actually drive up for it. I caught Jing Chi there last year and it was incredible.
Holey sheist, look at all those upcoming axe-whompin' shows. It's darned almost overkill.
I wish 1/100th% of that amount would hit this area within a DECADE'S time...LA area has long been one musical-mecca hotbed...duh. Makes me da** wanna move.
The competition must be ferocious...
Just out of curiousity - how many of you LA area / CA guys were either born [or raised there from early on] as opposed to recently re-located there [within the last so many, 5-10 years]?
How about you, Steve [H]? & do you do a lot of studio work in your spare time, or do you focus more on select gigs such as Altered & the violinist...
You folks that have lived there for years, it must seem like no big deal. To most of us "out here," it looks like you are some pretty lucky peeps, musically, culturally. But I bet they charge a pretty decent penny for those shows overall...cover/tix, parking, 2-drink minimum, etc...
Still...Yoshi's looks like DA' FRIKKIN' SH[r]EDD, though. Da Bomb.

I'm from San Diego originally, then East Bay for 8 years (Berkeley, Oakland) then LA for the last 5.
I didn't get spoiled until I moved to LA. I used to fly or drive down from the Bay Area to check out gigs down here. Now I am completely spoiled and frequently blow off gigs for fantastic reasons like, "it's going to be crowded" or "I'm tired." I never go see Vinnie anymore because the crowds are just overwhelming. (no problem in the Bay Area though as he's not nearly as well known up there)
I'm always glad when I do go though it does add up $$ wise. Seeing a big name person at a small place like the Baked Potato can be an $80 evening no problem.
Yeah, we are pretty lucky out here in CA. I've been all over the country and (for me) nothing beats CA. I'm a Bay Area native and visit Yoshis all the time. Their ticket prices are actually pretty cheap, and with a one drink minimum your really not out of pocket that much. I just saw Steve Smith and Vital Information a couple weeks ago and spent less than $25 for the whole evening.
I've been told at the Chick Corea/Electrik Band show coming up they will be filming for a live DVD. I'm not suprised considering Yoshis is one of the best sounding clubs in the US.

Fuse......
Born and raised here in L.A.
Around the age of 13 (1978), I started to see an influx of players to the L.A. area. And by the age of 26 (1991) some of the greats had already relocated here. I would assume it's a combination of the work and the weather that attracts professionals.
You're totally right when you say LA is a musical mecca, but then again, there must be 15 drummers to any one available band it seems. But un-like New York, you'd better have a car and like parking lot style traffic. LA county is huge. I know some guys that'll put 50,000 miles a year on a car gigging.
When it comes to culture.... I guess if you seek it out, it's there for the taking. Lotta plastic people that have never seen the inside of a playhouse or a museam, nonetheless a jazz club. So theres alot of everything here. ESPECIALLY HOT CHICKS AT THE BEACH IN THE SUMMERTIME!!!! YEAH!!!! YEAH!!!!!
Yoshi's sounds cool. I've been to that other jazz club in Oakland..... the name escapes me right now. Yoshi's surely beats the sometimes $25-$35 + 2 drinks that Catalina's charges. That sounds like a cool field trip for me.... and just 2 days after my 40th!!!
Derek.... doesn't that suck!!?? Last time Vince was at the Baked Tater, I knew it was going to be a d*ckfest. I bailed at the last minute because my "sardine" imitation isn't that good.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Wow, they must really love their job (or have desire to survive for that matter...) to go through that trouble.Quote:
