New Respect for Bozzio

Groove!!!

Bozzio is amazing. Frank only hired the "amazing" ones. Have you heard any early U.K.?? I'm sure you've heard both versions of the "Black Page"?? If not.... that is manditory Bozzio listening. Terry is an amazing player. Since childhood, I thought he was superhuman..... the way he was able to combine so many different sounds/chops/time signatures in such a small timeframe. Even the Missing Person's "Spings Session M" is burning. Great writing, great playing. An example of what happens when you get a great fusion guy playing/creating pop music.

As a kid, I always used to imagine some killer virtuoso drummers playing in different bands. I always wanted to know what Vinnie would have done with some of the Rush tunes. At least now we'll get to hear Vince with Jeff Berlin. I can't wait for that!!

But [& BION], I can't hear VC in a Rush tune now.

Well, OK, anything's indeed possible of course, but I think, & as a positive argument for NP, anyone else in Rush's chair just wouldn't be, well, "Rush," if you get my meaning.

VC would prob kill on it, of course, but that's just it...NP's playg gives it a certain rock-ish vibe that only he could bring to the table.

One of the very few drummers I could hear in Rush's chair would be Danny Carey; MAYBE Scott Rockenfield, even tho he feels the groove differently than NP [a TAD more "pulled back", perhaps. JMO].

Now don't any of you guys go & say, "Portnoy"... [img]wink.gif[/img] even tho I could possibly hear that AW [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Could you imagine TBoz in the chair?! Talk about 1-upping on those toms rolls, down-&-up them, & whatnot...lookout! /;cp

Ever hear Boz on the UK tune Only Thing She Needs [Danger Money]? Blistering rock-fusion coolness, & 1 of my faves.

Jeff Berlin's old instructional VHS had a burning but much too brief intro rock-fusion-jam-tune [after the initial introductory speak by actor Ronny Cox] w he, VC, Gambale, & keybdst Ron Reinhart, but it fades out after almost a minute only...[VC was grillin' some mean pork-chops / playg some way-cool sheist in there too] now that's some real sacrilege there, Jeffmeister!...DOH

I'm embarrassed to say that I've heard no "UK" whatsoever... [img]redface.gif[/img] I appreciate it's a must-have though, thanks for the heads-up. Any particular CD's that best represent his time with them?

Of course, the Black Page varients are great, even heard Wackerman on them, (what a great player that dude is too..) but I always had Terry down as some sort of 'different drummer'.

I had only really been familiar with Bozzio's solo drumming. I've seen him in clinic/performance a few times and always thought he was on the cutting edge of "solo drumming-music", but have new found respect after seeing him play like this with a band...

As far as Rush are concerned, they've never really had a following i the UK, (other than with some drummers), so I know none of their work. I've seen (what I could take of) Neil Peart's solo DVD though, but that's about as familiar with their work as I am...

You'll soon get to hear VC interpret Mahavishnu Orch, which oughta be cool considering Vinnie has said he would try to sound just like BC when he was learning his axe.

Not that I had no respect for him before, but I've just seen a video of Bozzio with Zappa in a live concert...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">UK only put out 3 CDs. Bruford was on the first, and Terry played on Danger Money (studio record) and Night After Night (live, with lots of overdubs). In my opinion, every drummer should own ALL THREE.

Fuse..... I with ya on that. Nowadays I don't think I would ever want to replace Neil with anyone else. But it would be cool for just an experiment to see what would happen. Maybe throw Aldridge into the mix??

Man!!! I have to ask Jeff about that "tune" you're talking about on his old instructional video. I'll see Jeff in April when he's recording his new CD.

Here's some classic UK that I got off easytree. Back in the 80's in Paris, France. Rather than post DangerMoney (which I also have live), I uploaded "Presto Vivace" which is the little diddy that was in between "By the light of day" and "In the dead of night".

ps... to this day, Eddie Jobson is the guy that made me a drummer in keyboardists skin. Keyboards are the ultimate percussion instument. Comping to his stuff is like a small slice of heaven. Not to mention his bad-assed electric violin playing. [img]wink.gif[/img]

pss.... groove.... you gotta see the Wackerman footage of him playing with Robin Ford at Yoshi's. Some very crankin Chad indeed!!!

This is one of my favorite drum albums.

Other less talked about TB performances (before he went into his solo drum thing) for me would be Castalia-Mark Isham and
My Guitar wants to kill your Mama-Dweezil Zappa

I also really like all three Lonely Bears albums.

Terry used to have a killer groove (and I'm sure he still does) and as much as I can see what he has done for drumming with his solo drum thing I still rate him most highly for the artistry, aggression and individuality he brought to his early recordings.

Terry's playing on Live in New York is awesome. Also, if you can get your hands on it, Frank's movie Baby Snakes is a fantastic example of Terry cranking away. But one ablum that no one has mentioned, and while it is Frank's most commercial of albums, it has some great playing on it, is Sheik Yerbouti. The 3 most enjoyable tunes on that album as far as Terry's playing goes is City of Tiny Lights, Wild Love and Yo Mama. Check that stuff out.

While Terry may have gone off into that "solo drumming" avenue years ago, I grew up on this stuff and always thought of Terry as an amazing and very musical drummer.

And I also agree that the Brecker Brother's Heavy Metal Bebop is one my favorite albums and a drummer's must have.

Speaking of someone else in the Rush chair...have any of you ever heard that Rush tribute CD? There's a variety of hard rock musicians on it, but Portnoy does all the drumming. (I believe it was his conception, but not 100% sure) The best tune, if that's what it's to be called, is probably La Villa Strangiato with Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, and Steve Morse. Portnoy, who I've never been a huge fan of, is stiff as a board, though he's playing Neil's grooves and fills on the 'Ghost of the Aragon'/'Danforth and Pape' sections stroke-for-stroke. But Sheehan and Morse sound awesome on 'La Villa...'. Portnoy also takes a solo on the beginning vamp of 'Jacob's Ladder'. Interesting ideas, but as usual, totally unoriginal.

Any of those who have heard this must have gotten a laugh out of Sebastian Bach singing Red Barcetta and Natural Science. Good Lord...

If nobody has these, I can post some of the tunes, though I'd need a hand because I'm a computer illiterate.
