So I'm looking at the Tascam DA-P1, mostly because I saw it on a site somewhere and somebody on here said it was a good one. But even on eBay, those suckers are pricy! Then I start thinking, "Hey, I've never made a movie or recorded sound at all. How the heck am I gonna know the difference between a $1,000 DAT recorder and a $500 one? So do any of you have a recommendation for a quality, reliable portable DAT recorder that doesn't have a $1,700 retail price?

Yep, rent one. Cheaper all round.

One would think so. But the cheapest I can find around here is about $60 a day for a portable DAT recorder. So... I could use one for 10 days or just buy something like this...

...for $596.78 My Marine of a brother finally got a bunch of money the Corps was supposed to be giving him, so he just payed me back $500 he owed me. Plus, I sold my XBox and my glorious, beautiful, powerful DVD collection (ouch) to fund this thing... actually, to fund the buying of equipment so I can use it on all my future projects until it breaks.
So fo sho', I'm buying one of these things. Say, that $600 one isn't sounding too bad...
