The rest of the event went on, and Mila watched a few more young, sexy people compete in the local kissing contest. Sabrina easily won her next two matches in seconds, and then, to Mila’s annoyance, Max and she ended up in the final together. They went at it longer than any other pair, except her and Sabrina’s tussle, and Mila felt a growing frustration that she had lost and now was forced to watch. It looked like Sabrina was taking her time toying with the man as she and Max made out hotly standing on the small stage…but eventually, she began to dominate. After three minutes, Max backed off with a shit eating grin as her long tongue seemingly tied his into a knot.

“Was there any doubt?!” The announcer yelled and held up the dark-haired woman’s hand. Everyone cheered, everyone but Mila, who did a single clap before crossing her arms back over her hidden ample chest. Sabrina happily smiled at the crowd, but it faded when her dark eyes landed on the silver-haired tourist. Mila felt a strong shiver go down her spine, and from the look alone…she knew…she had made an enemy.

The next few days, Mila simply studied, but she was able to enjoy her sudden boost in popularity when she ventured out for food or needed a walk. People smiled more, even those she was sure were not at the beach that night. Hell, even the food from the local restaurant tasted better. It was a little surreal that joining such a niche contest had this sort of impact, but Mila didn’t question it. She felt her confidence growing, which was enough to stay in this remote part of the world and not run back home. But noticeably, on the third day after the contest, she realized her hotel room hadn’t had any new towels or essentials replaced. It was not a big deal, but she decided to bring it up to the manager just to make sure it was included or if she needed to go buy some herself due to her extended stay. She was also meeting Max for the first time this week and was in a bit of a hurry. The manager apologized profusely and said he would have his team take care of it, but due to him being on the phone, she had to wait longer than she expected to ask the single question.

When Max asked what held her up 15 minutes later, Mila explained the weird situation with her room, and Max suddenly looked worried, responding with a single, “Oh.”

“What?” Mila asked, puzzled.

“Umm, there is only one maid who works at the hotel.”

He didn’t have to say the name of who it was; Mila knew right away, and her face gave it away. “Yeah, you guessed it. It’s Sabrina…she works there. I’m guessing she figured out who was staying in the room and is taking it out on you for giving her a run for her money in the contest.”

Mila then let out an abrupt gasp. That is where she recognized Sabrina! Her first day in this town, she had seen a maid on the far side of the hotel struggling with a massive pile of dirty towels. That must have been Sabrina! How could she not have made the connection when they were face to face on the beach!?

Max was still explaining, not noticing Mila’s expression. He was now going into a level of detail that she never would have expected him to tell her, “She is the only maid during the offseason. She hates tourists…even though she works at a hotel. She sees them as a plague on our town that do nothing but hurt the locals and her family specifically. They are…not rich. They used to have land, but her grandpa gave it to the hotel chain, the very one you are staying at. Then the hotel used some legal mumbo jumbo, and the family lost it completely. It was a famous trial here, and honestly, if they had better lawyers, they might have won…but no one here could afford them. Now she works there because she is so desperate to buy it back. It has sadly made her really bitter…they don’t pay her well at all to add on to the insult.”

“Oh”, Mila responded, though she found it hard to pity the woman after the shockingly poor sportsmanship she had shown at the contest. But the situation did sound sad, and she wasn’t sure she wouldn’t feel similar to Sabrina if it had been her grandpa who, instead of leaving this town, had fallen into a legal trap and lost their property. She remembered her grandpa telling her that the Marlow family still had land here, that they had owned a big lot. But she had no idea if it was true at all, and even if it was…she was sure someone like the hotel would have taken it by now.

Max was still talking. “She used to be so friendly! Well, at least to the locals. To be fair, she never has liked tourists all that much. But the last few years have been rough for her…and I think the understanding that she will never be able to get her family’s land back has dawned on her.” He finished with a sad expression.

“I see,” Mila replied without much emotion, lost in her own thoughts of her family. She pondered this information about the beach town’s past as she made her way back to the hotel that night. At some point, she planned to investigate her family at the local library for any clues if there was one to be found.

But when she got to her room, she found a new source of irritation that wiped away any of the good feelings that had been flowing through her. Even if the manager had brought fresh stuff, it seemed Sabrina had removed the needed items once again, and more so, even messed with her belongings! Her clothes were everywhere, the bed stripped, and her law books thrown about. All the pity she felt for the local girl vanished in a heartbeat, and Mila suddenly felt a hot anger towards her new enemy. This Sabrina! They didn’t even know each other! Outside of their…intense make-out session on the beach, that is. Furious, she marched down to the store and back with items, still fuming when she returned. She wanted to give that bitch a piece of her mind, and as fate would have it as she made her way down the hotel hall, Sabrina suddenly appeared out from one of the rooms, looking tired and disgusted from whatever mess she had just cleaned.

They froze as they locked eyes roughly 10 feet away from each other, and then both women’s orbs narrowed at the sight of their recent opponent. Mila spoke first, “Did you go into my room? Did you mess with my stuff?”

“Hmph, don’t know what you are talking about. I simply freshened it up for you.” Sabrina replied with some snark, putting her cleaning stuff onto a cart in the hall.

“I will report you.” Mila threatened with a light hiss.

Sabrina turned to face her fully in her plain grey maid outfit that went down to her knees. It was unflattering and seemed to make her look square-shaped, but Mila knew better.

“Please try it, tourist girl. You can’t prove anything, and they”, she gestured to the hotel, “won’t get rid of me. You don’t mean anything here. YOU are just a pathetic tourist who got lucky that she lasted a few extra seconds in our local contest. A contest that you shouldn’t have even been allowed to join! This little bump of popularity won’t last. Trust me. So, before you embarrass yourself further, get out of my town, leave Max and my friends alone, and honestly, fuck off. Bitch.” Sabrina spat, glaring at Mila before she started walking away pushing her cart.

Mila felt a wave of such fury she hadn’t felt in her life before, focused on a single person, “Oh, maid! My room was still a little dirty last week. Maybe you can clean it a bit better next time, or I won’t leave a tip, one I bet you desperately need.”

Sabrina froze, and then turned back towards the tourist, her stunning face looked equally pained as it was now wrathful, and Mila felt herself purse her lips.

“The fuck did you just say to me?” Sabrina whispered, clenched fists at her sides.

Mila immediately wanted to take back her words, the moment of rage passed as quickly as it had come, “I…sorry, that was really rude, but...I don’t think it’s fair that you just hate me or mess with my stuff just because I’m not from here. You don’t even know me.”

But Sabrina’s face looked even deadlier, yet she didn’t come closer and pointed instead. “You ever talk to me again, I’ll fuck you up.”

“Fuck me up? Are you insane? You have been nothing but a total bitch to me!” Mila yelled, the rage coming back like a roller coaster, “I don’t know what your fucking problem is…unless you can’t stand that I was about to beat you and your pathetic tongue on the beach. Oh god, is that really it?”

Sabrina’s brown eyes twitched. “No! That’s not it. All of you tourists are my problem because you ruin this town. Stay out of my way and stay out of the local shit. It’s not for you.” She paused and her lower lip with the small scar twitched, “And please, I was just about to fully gag you with my tongue. You are fucking lucky they pulled us apart before I choked you with it.”

“I doubt that and I’m happy to prove it anytime, bitch.” Mila growled, and weirdly, she meant it. “And just so you know, my family was from here, so I have just as much of a right to be here as you do,” Mila added with a flick of her silver hair. It wasn’t true but Mila didn’t care, she was just chatting shit now. Sabrina simply rolled her dark eyes.

“Oh, fuck me, you sound so much like a fucking wanna be. So many people come back here, and say, ‘oh my great great great fucking moron of a grandma’ was from here! Well, guess what? They left. And they left us to deal with the fucking fall out of them selling out their land and shit. And you are the worst type; your last name is Marlow, right?” Sabrina laughed mockingly at Mila as she continued, “I bet you don’t even know what they did. Everyone may have forgotten or forgiven, but I don’t, and I remember what your family did to mine. And I bet you don’t.”

Mila went quiet, and Sabrina huffed, “I thought so. Fucking classic.” But she didn’t elaborate further, and Mila was left on the defensive.

“Wow, you really are just a bitch. Maybe learn some manners because if all your family are as rude as you, maybe that’s the reason you lost your land.” Mila snapped.

Sabrina scowled dangerously at Mila, but was done with this conversation. “Whatever, it’s not worth even explaining to you. Fuck the past and all of them. And fuck you, get out of my town.” Sabrina snapped and ended the heated conversation by turning and walking away down the hall, her arms shaking as she pushed the cart.

Mila watched her new enemy go, her eyes annoyingly drawn to the seemingly toned ass her rival possessed that was somehow still visible behind the grey outfit. Then, she went back to her dirty room and started to clean it herself slowly. Sabrina was such a bitch…and she had kissed that bitch. It made her mouth feel dirty, and more so, it annoyed her how she had been so…turned on during the whole thing. That made it even worse! “Ugh.” She flopped onto the bed and ran her hands through her bright hair.

Mila didn’t listen to Sabrina’s warning and went down to the beach the next day anyway. She didn’t see the maid, and surprisingly, everyone who saw her still smiled, and a few even stopped to chat. When the main group of girls she was getting to know called her over to sit with them at the beach, Mila knew the damage hadn’t yet started.. When she mentioned Sabrina in passing, their eyes lowered, but a few offered more information. “Well, it likely is a little personal. You are a tourist, so she might hate you.”

“She also crushes on Max a little bit. So, like she might double hate you cause Max is def interested in you.” Another girl added.

“Triple hate.” The final girl added, “This tourist almost tongue-tied her in the contest, you might be the person Sabrina hates the most in the entire world. I don’t think anyone on the island has ever kissed her like that.”

“What’s her last name?” Mila asked.

“Alika. But don’t worry. She will be annoyed, but we will still hang with you. She doesn’t own the island or who we are friends with.” They all nodded in agreement. Mila smiled at them; friends was a kind word for them to use for people who had known her for such a short time. Though she doubted it was for her own benefit, and more so, the group of women seemed to be taking some frustration out on Sabrina for whatever reason. She stored the name Alika into her memory as well, planning on going to the library soon.

She did more exploring the next day, this time away from the beach. She didn’t fancy running into Sabrina today, so out of the hotel and away from the beach seemed the best bet. She had only just left the building when she came across a massive empty lot of land. It couldn’t have been more than a hundred yards from the hotel, but totally different. It looked rough, overgrown, though a few people had clearly been using it as a dump. The hotel had a bunch of stuff on it, too, but nothing built up. When she returned to the hotel a few hours later, she asked the manager about it. “Oh, that plot. What a waste. Big and good land, but technically, the hotel doesn’t own it. They have tried…trust me, big expansion plans. But the original owners never sold it and no longer live here. Only the original documents can be used for ownership now after the big trial years ago.. We do use it in some aspects, but that is only because unless the owners come back and claim it, no one can really have control over it.”

Mila had many thoughts running through her mind and her grandpa’s tale came flashing back. “And it was next to the Alika's land?”

He looked surprised at her mentioning that name. “Oh…um…yes, but they sold theirs to the hotel chain immediately.” He said no more, but was looking at Mila with a curious expression. Mila decided to end the conversation there and went back to her room. She wondered if she should even care, but it seemed fate was pushing it for her. Just the day after that conversation, Mila ran into the old woman from the bikini shop on the street. “The Marlow girl! I have heard you are Miss Popular in the town now. Come, I want to have tea with you.” The woman said, taking the tourist’s arm. Mila didn’t even have time to decline before she was back in the shop and being served. The woman had a bunch of old photos laid out on the table. “I knew, I knew that name from somewhere, just didn’t know how far back I had to go. I was in school with your grandfather! He used to live here!”

Mila nodded with a sigh, “Oh yeah, my great-grandmother was from here, and my grandfather lived here till he was like 19. He talked about this place but never really said why he left. I wanted to explore that side of my family, one of the reasons I’m here.”

The woman nodded, “You should!” Then she eyed Mila with a look that the silver-haired girl couldn’t place. “It’s funny, I might be the only one left in this town who remembers your family. Your grandfather was very close to the neighbor's family. They were like brothers. The Alika boy, now that name is still here. Have you met a young girl named Sabrina?”

“I have,” Mila replied coolly but didn’t elaborate.

“Good. Lovely girl. Beautiful even. Bit tough on the edges, but a sweetie when it comes to this town. Now, where was I…oh, yes, your grandfather and her’s owned the plots of land where the hotel is now. Then, on the day of the big meeting with the hotel chain, your grandfather just didn’t show up! Mila was gaping at her; that was new information. This was not a story he told. “He just didn’t show up to the meeting with the hotel chain? How…how do you know all of this?”

“Oh, this town has been my home for 87 years. Big things like this stick with you. But I’m sure he had his reasons.” Her voice went low, “Rumors were that those who didn’t sell found problems. Only when the high courts from the mainland stepped in was it stopped. But who knows? It was so long ago. Though shame, if he were still alive and had his lease, that giant plot of land next to the hotel would be his…or should I say…yours!” The woman cackled and then abruptly changed the subject, but Mila sat there in a stunned state.

After an hour, Mila took her leave. Her head hurt, but now things were starting to make sense. Did her family really still own the land? Why had her grandfather not told her or anyone about this? She wanted to talk to someone here about this, and Max was her first choice. But there was one problem. Max had been pulling away from her since the contest. Maybe Sabrina was keeping him in check now, or at least tempting him away with that tongue of hers, Mila thought with a scowl. It didn’t matter if she and Sabrina’s families had a history she now knew. Mila had no interest in discussing it with the bitch anyway, Sabrina had made that clear as well.

Over the next week, nothing really changed. Though Mila did email her family to ask about her grandpa’s old files, and her mother said she would look. She didn’t see Sabrina and mostly studied in her room during the day, and met up with the girls at night. A few times, she walked to the lot to take a further look. She also hung out with Max once, but she noticed he was even more distant. It seemed Sabrina’s hate was able to wash away any chance of a romantic evening with the young man that Mila desired.

She may have let it pass, but after her hangout with Max, she found her room in pieces again thanks to Sabrina’s mischief. But this time, Mila didn’t have a wave of fury or feel like she had to go confront the maid. She simply decided that she was going to take a shot at the holiday romance..
