Discussion: Using AI to write stories
Some authors are posting AI-generated stories, so I thought I'd start a discussion about using AI to help write stories in our favorite genre.
I've been tinkering with AI for a while now to write stories. The AI engines have been improving by leaps and bounds, and I think in 2-3 years readers will not be able to distinguish between a well-written AI story and a human-written story. Right now the AI engines do a good job of sticking to a coherent plot, but are overly verbose, use sentence structures that are too flowery, and struggle to describe detailed sex scenes in ways that a good writer from this board can.
Here has been my experience with using different AI engines so far -
General purpose AI (ChatGPT o4, Deepseek R1, Grok 3) - The standard versions are all censored (except for Grok) so you have to find uncensored AIs hosted elsewhere or host a LLM locally. I find that these models are difficult to prompt to do what you want, which is to write a story in small parts (you don't want it to write an entire story all at once, it will be terrible). Once you get into writing part by part, they are prone to repetition so you have to do a lot of manual editing.
SmutFinder - Surprisingly good for a free AI. I like the fact that you can generate a story one section at a time, and go back and edit/delete prior parts of the story before generating further.
NovelAI - I tried the paid version 6 months ago and was not impressed with the quality of their writing. Their models are outdated.
sudowrite - Haven't tried the paid version yet, but it looks very promising, though they give so few credits for free I can only write a few paragraphs. You can copy paste an existing story and it can write a continuation or edit existing parts, which is a very powerful functionality. Has anyone here tried sudowrite?
Re: Discussion: Using AI to write stories
Another free and unlimited option with no sign-up required is Perchance Story Generators.
Story: Just a moment...
Plot: Just a moment...
Story Generator with settings and infinite word generation option: Just a moment...
Quality is a bit mixed but the unlimited nature allows you to experiment and sometimes it will surprise you.
Re: Discussion: Using AI to write stories
I hate most of AI's applications for stories. The only one I can live with is for grammar and proofreading. The rest I really dislike.
I'm having trouble getting into new writers because of it (Amazon) catfight and sexfights section for example.
Re: Discussion: Using AI to write stories
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. should be good for now.
AI generate stories are borderline unreadable if you know what to look for and will, for the time being, get deleted.
