Vinnie's right hand..

I just finished re-watching the live DVD with Sting, from Miyazaki, 1994, and one thing leapt out at me. During the instrumental break in Englishman in New York, there's a clear shot of Vinnie's ride hand, playing a really lazy swing pattern....during this, his hand is almost open upwards, and he seems to almost throw the stick at the cymbal with an open hand, catching it very loosely in time for the next beat - am i explaining this clearly? It just seems to me that this gives the break a very loose, floaty feel ( notice how I'm avoiding the use of the word "J**z" here), compared to other places in the concert, where his grip is palm down, finger along the stick - mainly when he's playing a bell pattern.
Posting this for no reason other than:
A. It struck me
B. This is a Vinnie forum???

I kinda noticed that in BRMSC. It's like french griproted 30 degrees clockwise. He only does it when he swings though. On most other stuff the top of his hand is up and near flat.

I noticed this too when he was doing it in the Sting unplugged video. Looked strange to me, didn't dig that approach... I don't think he does it anymore though.

He still does it.....

Saw him at Yoshi's last weekend doing the same thing from time to time. The amazing thing about Vinnie from really watching him close up over the years is that he constantly adjusts his playing grip. From the stuff we're familiar with to things you wouldn't even dream of to get a particular "sound".

I'm trying to remember this one part off of one of his recordings..... where he hits the HH and gets this kinda buzz roll while playing a reygay groove. I tried and tried to duplicate the way it sounded using my regular grip. But then I saw him do it live and was bascially pissed at myself. He just kinda threw the stick sloppily at the hats and out came that certain Ddddddddd.

So... I guess what I've learned over the years is, how you attack the drums has alot to do with the way they sound. And things that you'd think weren't technically "correct" actually serve a purpose.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, as my grandfather used to say.

yeah he still does it. It's all over that Faith Hill tune in 3 on her DVD.

i tech'd the Gretsch 120th Anniversary party 2 years ago. Vinnie came with a trio. He played some of the most unconventional things I've EVER SEEN!! reading charts the whole time. the guy is amazing. the most surreal part of that night was having Fred Gretsch Hand me Vinny's persoanl stick and cymbal bag. I thought I was going to faint. Then.... To have Vinny come in, rip the kit up with a pair sticks, and DIG the set-up and tune I just layed on them .. Sweeeet.. Then we had dinner and I was glued to him all night.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">If I get what you're talking about he does it on "Something the Boy Said" from Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales. And maybe on one of the songs form Unplugged too...though I can't remember for sure.

Yeah, JM, I actually stumbled across my own version of that one day during practice/playg back in the mid-80s, just to find that VC does it AW. Made me feel good [img]redface.gif[/img] ;c)

VC also does it in the intro to Sting / 10 Summ Tls / # 10, Something the Boy Said at approx :10 sec...

& hold your sticks like Marotta does in that Dan DVD [& not unlike you said]: like a boiled spaghetti noodle! Aaaahhh...that Marotta relaxed grip... ;c)

AFA the normal grip, I personally do this a lot. As a common "rightey," rotate btwn RH conventional MG & a "Frenchy," w the palm a little more rotated clockwise than near flat, & possibly occasionally points in between. Keeping the Weck/Moeller/fingers rebound thing in mind in realtion to whatever grip is applicable, mind you.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I love that buzz on the hats. I first noticed it somewhere on Patitucci's 'Sketchbook'.
I think the tune in question on 'Unplugged' is 'Walking on the Moon'.(where you can actually see it executed) I've been watching that one a lot lately. That dvd is a lesson in Vinnie's playing. IMHO 'Mad About You' demonstrates more subtlety and variation on just the hi-hat than even Stewart Copeland could muster.
