And I have to say, Roger Ebert is a fucking retard of the highest order.
The story was better than almost all the Marvel movies to date, and this movie was without a doubt the most faithful to the comic, in substance, theme, and overall feel.
I had a shit-eating grin on my face all through the movie, and I still do.
Good. I'm planning on seeing it this weekend but I was cringing waiting for it to suck.
Let me clarify.... the previews I've seen look good in regards to the four heroes, their powers, and their banter. I'm expecting Doom to walk on screen and look like a big lumbering dork with silly powers (ala the absorbing man in Hulk).
Nope, he is Dr. Doom. Once he showed up in costume I nearly crapped my pants. He looks straight off the page of the comic, but looks 100% real.
The character is perfect, the only thing is that he doesn't rely on technology for his powers like he does in the comic. And he only really has one power.

I agree, very true to banter and character manerisims.
The Thing really should be a lot bigger but I was pleased with how they pulled him off. I was worried about the voice but it was good. There were [i]many[i] funny parts - it did a great job of the practical jokes between Jonny and Ben.
Doom was better than expected too. Julian did a great job of pulling off Victor's pompusness.
Yeah, the theatre was laughing their asses off at all the right parts.
I picked up Sue and Mr. F... wich are actually very good figures. I wasn't keen on Johnny and I haven't decided if I want movie Ben or Marvel Ben... maybe movie Ben with Marvel Ben's head...

I just got back myself and I would say it wasn't that great at all. My kid loved it, but I thought it was only maybe better than Punisher when it comes to recent superhero flicks. And that isn't saying much.
It didn't look like they put much cash in the budget for visuals [I cringed when Mr. F stretched, it looked really bad to me] and the whole plot was weird to me, the point was what again?
FF never interested me as a comic, and the movie doesn't really interest me that much either. I might rent it once its out on dvd though.

Like I said, as a fan of the comic, it felt very faithful to the book, and I'm glad it didn't try to be serious, because the book has always been light-hearted.
And I thought the Mr. Fantastic effects were perfect.

I think the reason it's getting shredded by critics is that it is true to the comics, like you said.
