...ok, what is the deal about Blu-Ray and HD-DVD? Why do I care? What is it going to end up costing me? Am I going to have to buy two different players because of this BS? What becomes of my old format DVDs? Keep it simple, I don't need the tech-jargon and we all know I can only really show any interest in the actual bottom line. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Format will be compatible with actual CD/DVD/VCD media, but of course will mean higuer capacity and resolution. It's still too early to invest, you can be fine with normal DVD for many years until prices drop. In fact, DVD recorders are still above the 100 dollars.

Actually, lots of people are worried, particularly the movie companies, because the two are incompatible with each other. Think Betamax and VHS.
The first Blu-ray players are going to be out by the end of the year, and both Sony and Toshiba are cruising forward with their own plans. But I don't think we'll see both make it to market, because movie companies aren't going to support two formats. Talks have been going on between the two (Sony and Toshiba), forced in a way by folks like Paramount and UA, to work out a deal. I bet it will be something like we use your hardware if you use our firmware, we both get rich, blah blah blah.
You don't need to worry though - the players will also handle original DVD format just fine. I'm betting they'll upscale it as well. All it means is that in the next 12 - 18 months, early adopters will have something cool to buy again.
