I haven't ever returned anything to American Girl so I'm not really clear on their policy. The printable return form I found on their website lists "duplicate gift" as one of the reasons for returning but do I have to give them the name of the person who bought it for me? I actually just want to return two items that I got as gifts (that I already had) and exchange them for something else. I'm just not sure how it works when you're returning something you didn't buy yourself.
Also, does it have to still be in the original box? One of the things I'm returning is an outfit but I didn't keep the box because I was going to give it to my sister, but she already had it too. Will they take it back without the box?

I was in the same situation. You don't have to send it back in the original box (all returns go to the MCM sale anyway), but you do have to mail it in yourself (ie, they won't give a shipping label) if it was a gift. If you know who bought it, they can look it up and then maybe send you a label. I would call Customer Service and see if they will, if you know the person bought it online or through the catalogue.
If they bought it for you at AG Place and no longer have the receipt, then you'll have to mail it in.
