I got the idea that I really want a black hair, green eyed doll. I want a Sara Crew doll-from the book A Little Princess. I know they don't make a black hair/green eyed combo-but they have VERY few black hair dolls. Most are dark brown.

Sara Crewe... I just read that book. Sigh....such a great great great book. Sara is such a sweet sweet sweet little girl. I think that's a great idea to make a Sara doll. You could always rewig a green eyed doll to make a black haired green eyed doll.
I was thinking that. Her collection could be similiar to Samantha's in the beginning-it takes place around the same time. I used that book in a college paper.
It is the first chapter book I read by myself-I read it when I was 6. I fell in love instantly. I have 3 copies at home-an illustrated hardbound with gorgeous illustrations-the classic copy that is sold in the store (the one that is the pink cover and comes with a necklace)That is one I got when I was six. My great aunt and uncle gave me that book.
The velvet Hallmark gift book I got as a college graduation from my fiancee.
As much as I love the story-I don't care for the movies at all. The book is just so amazing that the movies just pale by comparision. The only one that is a decent version was years ago-as a mini series on Disney. It was done by a British Movie Company-i forget which one. I love that version.

I think it's hard to judge the movies when you're such a fan of the book, lol!
None of the movie versions I've seen are very close to the book: The WB version is gorgeous to look at, but the end is obviously so very off, and the Shirley Temple version: LOL. I'm pretty sure these are the only ones I've seen (and I own them both, and watch them often).
I will admit I have never been able to finish the book, I didn't read it when I was little, and only tried more recently after loving the WB movie. It's very hard for me to read a book where I KNOW the story, and I know the story VERY well.
The Secret Garden is probably my absolute favorite story of all time. That one has also not gotten a very acurate/good movie. I think it would be very hard to translate it to screen right, the second half of the book pretty much changes to being all about Colin. Obviously any Secret Garden movie is going to be aimed at girls, and I think that would just be very difficult to do right. The WB movie is one of my absolute favorite movies.
The only film version of The Secret Garden that's really faithful to the book, is the BBC version (funny, you mentioned the only faithful ALP was a British one, as well), but I don't like the casting or atmosphere of that one, I'd prefer to watch a story that's not the same/as good as the book, and get a movie that I really enjoy watching.
I'm sure you know you'd have to rewig a doll, I think the only Caucasian looking black haired doll is the new one, AGT25. There used to be an AGT with dark brown hair and green eyes, who's probably work just fine, the dark hair is really pretty dark. Personally, I think these neon green eyes would look crazy with black hair! I'd get AGT21 and rewigg her, then she'd still look like Sara, but she wouldn't be "scary" looking.
I like the idea of making a doll that's in a time period that AG already has clothes of! I long to make an Anastasia Romanov doll, and am quite fortunate that she would also be about the same time period, and a few of Sam's outfits would be great. I'd still need to figure out how to sew really well, to make 2-3 outfits for her. But it is nice that AG has a nice collection of outfits that are very close already.
I think it was the BBC that put it out-it stayed very accurately to the books.
I actually loved the Secret Garden as well-the book, I still have my old tattered childhood version I read every summer.
I never actually saw the Secret Garden movie-my mom, brother and I were going to see it. I must have been about 10 or 11, he was about 3 or 4. It was a rainy summer day, and my mom was going to treat us to Pizza Hut and The Secret Garden. Instead my joy of a brother decided to color on the walls that day-and as punishment we couldn't see the movie. I was SO MAD!
In the book Sara's appearance is described as: her hair was heavy and quite black and only curled at the tips; her eyes were greenish grey."
Maybe one day they won't have the neon green eyes-maybe an old fixer up felicity with black hair. I'll have to check out 21's eye color.

Both "THE Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess" are online free at Project Gutenberg... www.gutenberg.org look in the online catelog under Frances Hodgson Burnett.
I liked the movie, but only when looking at it as a completely different story. None of the movies I've seen are like the book... especially the end of A Little Princess (the Shirley Temple version and that other one set during WWI.) and the beginning of the 1993 Secret Garden.
I have to say, the movies were a lot better before I read the books. Great books books books!
If they eyes were "greenish grey" (how do you remember that exact phrase?? ) you coould always rewig a grey-eyed doll. Sara is so endearing, I can see why you would want to make a doll out of her.
Then you could make a Mary Lennox doll... Yellow hair and brown eyes. Mary was nicer at the end of the book, and she became endearing, too.
Yup, both books are public domain.
I would love to make a Mary doll. I think I'd have to go with the 93 movie version, though, and not the book, simply because I saw the movie long before I read the book, and watch it constantly, whereas I just read the book about once or twice a year. I don't think any of the current AGTs look enough like how I picture her. That Kaya face mold would be *perfect*, IMO. I'd love a doll with that mold, light brown/dirty blonde hair, eye color really wouldn't matter.
I like the 93 Secret Garden's beginning, I think it's an improvement upon the book (didn't think I would ever say that about any book made into a movie!). Especially for young kids who aren't going to a) know any better, or b) know what cholera even is. I also think this just makes more sense. It gives Mary an air of indifference, instead of plain old brattyness (but they soon fix that!). And it quickly moves the story into the next scene, the other movie versions take too long because they focus on that for 10+ minutes. The old one with Margaret O'Brien comes to mind.
Jordyn, you might want to look into getting an older PM green eyed doll. My AGT (in my avatar) is PM and her eyes, although still neon, seem much less bright than the current Felicity eyes. I think those eyes would look gorgeous with black hair. I was very tempted to get a black wig for that doll when I rewigged her, but I was so set on red! Good luck if you ever decide to make Sara, and post pics if you do!
I like the way the Margaret O'Brien movie had the garden in color and the outside in black and white (or am I thinking of something else?)
I like the Cholera thing better than the earthquake mostly beause the cholera was the original story (and I always prefer originals If I don't prefer originals, then I like the original and the other thing the same and have to think of them as 2 different stories.) and also because it is so dramatic. I think Mary was supposed to be bratty before she learned better.
I love the contrast between Sara and Mary, because it shows that rich people are just like anyuone else... some are good and some are not.
I think the girl in the 1993 version of the movie was beautiful and would make a very good doll.
Please post pics whenever you might make your dolls! I can't wait

Ophelia was a PM Felicity. Black hair, green eyes. it didn't look weird at all! She eventually got dog attacked and had to go to the hospital though so she's a Felicity again (this is how I ended up with 2 Lissies LOL)
I am lol I haven't read that book in years and just read it again. I was wishing they had a black hair green eyed doll myself
Funny you should post the topic
