Earth Engine's band of broadband brothers took root in American popular culture.
Remember the psychedelic light shows popularized in the 1960s? A decade later, some of them had Seth Zimmerman at the controls as a college intern assigned to a multimedia arts center in New York's Soho. He then tackled the record industry, working with the English "new wave" group Dexy's Midnight Runners and other rock acts.
Zimmerman's mentor was Jimmy Miller, the late brother of controversial New York Times reporter Judith Miller. By the time they met at the end of the 1970s, Miller had already produced four Rolling Stones albums, from "Beggars Banquet" to "Exile on Main Street"
"Jimmy eventually made me his partner," Zimmerman says. "Through him, I got to know and work with Sid Bernstein, the promoter who brought the Beatles invasion to America."
So it's no surprise that Zimmerman found he had much in common with Ron Schneider when a mutual friend introduced them in the 1980s. The latter man got a start in the music business at age 18 or 19, thanks to his mother's brother: Allen Klein, who guided the finances of early pop stars Sam Cooke, Neil Sedaka and Bobby Vinton before adding the Stones to his clientele.
When New Jersey native Schneider graduated from the University of Miami in 1965 with an accounting degree, he went on the road with the cheeky British rockers because his uncle wanted him to handle the box office. It proved to be the first of several raucous U.S. tours on his resume.
Schneider later hired filmmaking brothers Albert and David Maysles to shoot what would become "Gimme Shelter," a classic 1970 Stones documentary that witnessed a young man being killed at an outdoor concert by Hells Angels hired to provide security.
Things were a bit less dangerous in the company of John, Paul, George and Ringo. After Allen Klein took the helm at Apple, the Liverpool Lads' experiment in self-management, Schneider became involved. "When the Beatles broke up in 1970, I had been with them for two years," he says.
In contrast, Todd Stevens went from making Super-8mm claymation movies in high school to a prestigious television career. As boys, he and Zimmerman were members of the same Cub Scout pack in Great Neck, Long Island.
They eventually went their separate ways until reuniting in the early 1990s. By that time Stevens had co-founded WEIRD.TV, an underground channel that's now seen on MSNVideo. He developed programs for the Sci-Fi Channel, such as "Mysteries From Beyond the Other Dominion." His stint at "Friends," most of it as co-executive producer, lasted until the show ended in 2004.
Through Zimmerman, Stevens got to know Schneider about eight years ago. In 1999, the trio collaborated to help a Washington, D.C., think tank plan for possible Y2K problems. They began mulling over ideas for environmental programming on cable television, which led them instead to the Web savvy Earth Engine.
Stevens recruited Reid, whose EAT.TV firm invented Living.Com. This application for on-demand entertainment navigation, viewing and advertising earned him a 2005 technical Emmy Award.
Reid envisions Earth Engine as democracy in action. "This is a video hub for ecology that links people to causes," he says. "It's kind of an open forum, a place where people feel welcome. We see ourselves as traffic controllers."
