Need a little help. I have a pair of 8" woofers that came out of my first speakers - Altec Model Ones purchased back in 1975. I want to build a couple of speakers using these woofers and am looking for the Thiele-Small parameters for them. I found the list on this page but am not sure of the exact part number for the woofer. Would appreciate any info available. Thanks.
Don't think there are any T-S specs for those. They're listed as 30867, and were non-repairable (throwaway) drivers, meaning that Altec likely bought them instead of built them. I guess I can relate, If you built VOTTs all day, who'd wanna be stuck assembling 8" stuff...They could be from any of several US manufacturers, none of which publicized any T-S data, if they ever had any.. Post all the #s on it, and I'll check, but don't hold your breath.
I'd look up the model One dimensions/layout in one of the '75 catalogs, and clone 'em, or at least use ~ same volume and tuning.
I admire you for holding on to those speakers as long as you have, I'll bet there's even a story or two involved. Restore all you want for nostalgia, but don't be surprised if it just doesn't sound quite as good as you recalled, lot's of things seemed way better back then than they really were..... http://www.hostboard.com/forums/
BFISH - Thanks for the reply. No need to do any more research. I will just measure the TS myself. Just didn't want to remove them from the box they are currently installed in until I absolutely had to since they are still being used.
Currently, they are in an old JBL L40 box - I know the L40 had a 10" woofer. Long story, but they don't sound very good in the L40 box, not surprising, but I put them in there about 20 years ago when the tweeters in my Model One's blew. I happened to inherit a pair of L40s with blown woofers about the same time - actually they had holes in them - so I said why not combine the two. They did OK for my basement. But now I want to take out the woofers and build some small bookshelf speakers for my 15 year old son - which is about how old I was when I bought the Model Ones initially.
I figure I can use the woofers, a couple of midranges I have laying around and the tweeters from the L40's to build some half way decent 3-ways. With some creative crossover building I can probably get a pretty good sounding set of speakers for less than 50 bucks. Plus it gives me something to do to keep me out of trouble.
Model nines are the lowest model # altec I could find a woofer part number for at GPA site...
It's a CTS woofer, probably was only 20 bucks or so at the time to replace. Or 35 if you bought it from Altec....
