When I was reading the thread about outfits that are disliked, Sam's bridesmaid dress was one mentioned a lot. I never understood why AG made that dress so ugly, IMO. The sad thing is that the costume in the movie was very pretty. I took some close-ups of the movie costume when it was on display at AGPC.
I really wish AG would have made a better copy of the movie bridesmaid dress.

That is a very good example of Mattel taking the "Barbie" route. I'll never understand why they will make one so detailed and lovely (talent show), and then give us something like this. They must have different designers for different outfits, and made a real gaff on this one!

You're right--the movie version is much more tasteful and elegant!

I felt the same way when I saw this dress, but my daughter loved it. I bet it is very popular among lots of little girls.

The movie dress is pretty! Thank you for posting that! It would be awesome IMO if AG made really neat outfits for Samantha out of silk and stuff. This dress would be awesome if it looked like the dress in the movie.
On that note, I love the talent show dress, and know its a repo from a real dress, but have never heard more than that. Does anyone have a like to the old thread or a picture of the "real" talent show dress?

I agree. I was very disappointed when I first saw it. It would have been so easy for them to copy it for the doll, or at least try.
For one thing, the sleeves could easily have been made elbow-length instead of full-length, and it would've saved money too!
For another thing, they could have made 1 row of ruffles at the hem, instead of 3 rows of ruffles, and they could have made the lace row on top of the ruffle, instead of on the bottom row.
For another thing, they could've made the wrap-around portion of the bodice go 3/4 of the way around the front, instead of all the way to the side. That would have made the lace area on center of the bodice more open.
They could have also made the second row of lace on the collar wide, instead of two narrow rows of lace.
They could have also made a lace ruffle at the end of the sleeve, instead of just a fabric ruffle.
They could have also put fewer gathers in the skirt at the waist, so the skirt would hang down more and not be so poofy.
Here's my version of the picture of the movie dress (looks like Judi and I had the same idea ).....

The hat should have been smaller. There should have been one less ruffle on the skirt and the lavender color should have been more of a grape like the movie dress. Also, the fabric should have been more like the talent show dress fabric rather than the shiny polyester.

I agree with you on this. The movie version of the dress and the hat is so pretty. They would been wise to cut back on the ruffles. The lace around the neck, sleeves and skirt is just right in the movie version.
Thanks for showing us the photos.

Oh, I just don't see why everyone hates this dress so much! As someone destined for a long line of hideous bridesmaid dresses, I'm so happy to see that it has been the case for a century, lol. I know that seems cheesy or cynical, but if the dress were really as pretty as the movie version, I wouldn't care for it at all. I love that AG really captured the idea of a bridesmaid dress with it. I know I'm completely alone in this, but it's one of my very favorites!
ETA: the first time my mom saw the dress she said, "Awwwwww!!! It's so ugly it's adorable! You have to get it!"

I think it is the only outfit that has ever made an American Girl Doll look fat. So Mayergirl, are you saying this ugliness is all an attempt by the bride to ensure not being upstaged by the bridesmaids?
