MLB Salaries
No one can tell me that anyone is worth this kind of pay to simply throw a ball around. I can honestly say it makes me sick to think such people are paid this much and even sicker the number of people who patronize the sports and think it's OK...
Let someone go to college and then medical school and he/she won't make that much in a lifetime. Or teachers trying to educate the future, or police and firefighters who put their lives on the line, what about soldiers in the armed forces?
But no, let's pay a baseball player this much so that the stupid population can be distracted...
Not singling him out either, but just happened to see the story. It applies to celebrities like Britney Spears and NFL players and all the other over paid, under talented ass clowns out there.

Truth be told, the major difference is the simple fact that there wont be around 5 or 6 million people a year paying to see anyone in those professions perform their jobs in person (not to mention the millions who watch on tv, the internet or listen at home) nor will there be people buying their uniforms, or cards or autographs.
Everyone wants to be able to make as much as they can at their job, whatever it is, but it still come down to who's paying them.
With the muti-billion dollar tv contracts and advertising deals along with the merchandising there is a ton of money pouring in. The players, just want as much of that pie as they can get because...
An empty stadium/ballpark doesnt make the owners any dough rey me either.
Yeah, those are crazy numbers GL. But, they pale in comparison to the amounts coming in.
The bigger news today is the steroid/illegal substance use findings.

Of course A-Rod is worth that much. His salary is determined by a free market which assigns value extremely accurately. Market pricing can become inaccurate at times as in a tech stock bubble, but these are brief periods that are quickly corrected. Sports salaries have been increasing way too long to be over priced - obviously premium players bring in more money than they cost. Sports salaries are not perverted, but we might not be able to say the same about American morals which drive the free market. [img]graemlins/angel.gif[/img]

Yes and no, Lan. You are correct in asserting that A-Rod has "market value" in the New York market, in this day and age. But I'm not sure the market is going to bear it in the future, because I believe the sport is killing itself with this crap.
Why do people love the NFL so much? OK gambling, but after that? Because every training camp, fans in almost every city get excited over their team's chances. And why not? Look at the rotation you have in the playoffs. The Bears, Ravens, Jets, and Chiefs went to the playoffs last year, they're out this time. The Packers, Vikings, Giants, and Jaguars did not go last year, they're in (or most likely in) this year. The NFL understands that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
MLB refuses to address this issue. It's Yankees and Red Sox, maybe a few bones here and there to some other teams, and basically F the fans in Kansas City, Tampa, Pittsburgh, etc. And spare me the token stories about the Rockies and Diamondbacks this year. Or how the A's have been able to put together some decent teams despite their small market.
And they're able to get away with it now because my generation (and all those ahead of me) grew up with baseball, and we have disposable income. But I really wonder how excited kids are about it. Attendance is up, but TV ratings are down and falling. When I was in school, all the kids in class knew all the players and teams, we talked about it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't imagine going to an elementary school now and hearing such conversation. Kids in Kansas City are not excited over the Royals now, and my suspicion is there are several cities that have bascially lost a generation of fans. And no, it's not just market disparities. Things like having the World Series games going until midnight on school nights don't help, either.
In other words, it may be good for the cities of Boston and New York if their teams are good, and in the short term it may be good for everyone, but I believe in time that will backfire on them.

The funniest part is how some red sox fans look at the Yankees as "the evil empire" and complain about how the Yankees try to "buy championships" when they pretty much do the same thing. LOL!
Calling the Red Sox any kind of "underdogs" to the Yankees is laughable, they spend almost as much.
