Black thursday starting early
With no collective bargaining agreement forthcoming, teams have already began to cut all of their players to get under the salary cap(92 million dollars). Teams like the redskins are in cap hell and will now be forced to pay the piper. Rumors are that the skins will have to cut 10+ players of consequence. Other teams in cap hell are the raiders, jets, chiefs, and bucs.
If no agreement is reached by 4pm tomorrow, there will not be a salary cap in 2007 and then in 2008 revenue sharing is out the door and teams will be able to spend as much as they want(skins=yankees, cowboys=red sox). Teams like Jax, Cincy, SD will be small market teams that will struggle to survive in the competitive sense. Also this could open the flood gates for college players to leave after 1 year of college or even after high school unfortunately. Gene Upshaw of the players union states that the players will never agree to another cap if 07 becomes an uncapped year. This is going to get ugly.

Re: Black thursday starting early
Well, in a way this could serve some teams some good in the long run. They're getting rid of popular players w/some talent, sure, but they'll be able to draft in one of the deepest drafts talent-wise in a while. Also, with all this cap room getting cleared to get under the cap this year, that means most of the time they're saving money in future years to pick up a veteran skill guy that could help put their team over the hump and into the playoffs or even in the Super Bowl.
It's all in perspective--I'm sure Dolphins fans are pissed they lost Sam Madison, but who's to say the Dolphins won't take a corner in the first round this year that replaces him perfectly. You've done a few things: saved some cap room if the kid is willing to structure his contract right, gotten younger and possibly more talented as a position, and advanced your future for a few years, and accelerated that healing process to get back to winning.

This morning owners met and voted unanimously to break off all talks with the nflpa. Looks like there will be no CBA for 2008 and beyond.
