PV Exposed
It was way to late for me to post whenever I got back to Wise last night, and I'm sick as a dog so I'd figure I'd throw my thoughts in on last nights game.
3-3-5 Defense: Run it, PV has no answer for it. They refuse to run the ball and it allows a backer to get a free shot at Cedric every play, sure you leave a man open but you only got 2-3 seconds to get the ball there and PV cant do it. So by all means if you have the athletes run 3-3-5 and you'll beat PV. At this point, unless PV changes up their offense I dont know how there going to beat Norton. The only time PV scored last night is when they mixed up their offense and ran the ball out of the I formation some.
Offensive Line: As I said in the pre-season weakest spot on the team, cant block out of the spread. I understand in that offense a backer is let free, but to have a backer and two defensive lineman in your QB's face when he gets the ball and takes not even a 3 step drop is a bit much. I noticed we rotated some offensive lineman last night, didn't seem to help much. I hope we can get this corrected.
PV's Defense: Somebody scouted us! From day one we've not been able to stop an option or bootleg. Well, guess what Seymour ran all night? You got it, options and bootlegs. PV needs some major work on the outside, (another scary thing when it comes to playing Norton). Seymour would even tell you the play on both sides of the ball last night, when they had the ball if 17 was in the game it was option or bootleg, if the other QB was in it was pass or run up the gut with 31. When we had the ball Seymour's Saftey gave the blitz package away every play, depending on where he lined up told where the blitz was coming from.
Spread Formation in General: It's fun to watch and you'll blow the Pound's of the world out of the water but when you match up with schools that have athletes and have smart enough coaches to run a 3-3-5 or a 4-2-5 your in for a long night. I honestly think the change was made to beat GC, well thats accomplished but it's also in the past. Run the spread when you play GC, but when you play the Nortons, Seymours, Lee High's (soon to be really good), and Breathitt County's of the world you have to run the ball. As a little kid growing up, I remember watching us get in the I and run the ball down peoples throats. Granted our line was better then, but I have to say I was shocked last night when I see PV with the ball on the goal line with a 4th down and 1 yard to go come out in spread and try to run a pass play. If you cant give the ball to Brian Murphy and not pick up yard you need to go to the house, and evidently we didn't think we could so we ended up at the house embarrassed.
Overall: We need to establish some form of running game, running means winning. I dont care what people say all great teams can run the ball some way. Look at the last two state champions, Manassas Park in 04 ran the ball all over people with QB sweep. Giles ran the ball like crazy last year and always have. I guess all I'm saying is some games you cant run spread. Games where PV was equaled in athletes since 04.
PV vs. Breathitt Co (04) BC won at the park by two td's if I remember correctly.
PV vs. Manassas Park (04) 20-13 MP
PV vs. Seymour (05) Seymour wins by two points as PV manages to only score 15 points.
PV vs. Breathitt Co (05) PV won by one point 14-13
PV vs. Clintwood (05) Clintwood beats PV for the first time since Justin Hamilton
PV vs. Norton (05) Norton beats PV for the first time since 93
PV vs. Haysi (05) PV gets manhandled all up and down the offensive line and loses the Regional Championship.
One good thing about last night was it got us back down to earth, people overhyped this team through the roof. At least we know we can lose now. I remember watching the hardest practice I'd ever seen at PV in 01 after we lost to Grundy. I'd expect something like that come Monday. It's time to wake up boys in the words of Coach Huff people aren't going to roll over and play dead just cause you have a jersey on that says Powell Valley. Those days are over.

Great game analysis, mr. d.

Re: PV Exposed
Pretty much the exact same thing I said in the thread I started. Phil Robbins has lost his freakin mind. Lots of things I'd like to say on here but wont.

Re: PV Exposed
Face it people, Like it or not, PV is one of the most respected football programs in the state. Yes, I agree that they need to go back to the set that got them to where they are today, since they have been running the spread, what kind of chanpionships have they gotten. None, zilch, nada, nothing. Seems to me they need to go back in history and take a look at what got them to where they are today. Mitchell is a good athelete, but so are the Pinkstons,Murphy, and the others. The only purpose this offense is serving PV is to try and showcase Mitchell. Hasn't done much to the other atheleted on the team. Remember, this offense was put in to "show" how good an athelete Brad was. Mruphy is one of the hardest running backs in the state, but he can't show it if he doesn't get the ball.

Re: PV Exposed
Ok,just another fact to show how much Phil has lost it. He longer makes the team run during practice. Also, at the end of practice, Cedric Mitchell is not allowed to walk off the field to the field house, he is taken there in a golf cart, with Phil.
Next year instead of practice, he's going to give them a copy of NCAA 08 for their PSP's and tell them to come back on Friday ready to play.

Re: PV Exposed
Good one!! Yep I have seen the shenanigans at practice, too.

Re: PV Exposed
Coach Crabtree figured out Phil's offense while he was there and running the scout team D. He was telling me how it took him a few weeks but then he went to the 3-3-5 with an umbrella look and just shut it down completely and just pi$$ed Phil off to no end in practice.

Re: PV Exposed
I just want to make one thing clear, I mean no disrepect to ANY of the players. I think they have an amazing amount of talent. I know I mentioned Cedric a couple times, and I think he is a very talented individual too....it's just Phil's misuse of him and all the talent they have that really makes me mad.
I have never got on this board and been so vocal about things at PV. I guess its just being tired after driving 2 and a half hours to watch Robbins stubborness really drive PV into the ground. Just really aggrevated to see one of the most talented PV teams we've had in years get beat because he wants to TRY and prove a point.

Re: PV Exposed
Couldn't agree with you more.
PV's practices have become a joke. Kids on the sidelines passing, laughing, playing grab butt. Phil runs the entire show - never figure out why he needs assistants. The problem with the offensive line is that for several years now all they've been taught is to pass block; good rush blocking requires alot of practice with attention to the fundamentals (foot position, hand position, etc). I see none of that happening. I think that if PV would buckle down and run from the T, then possibly they could live up to some of the hype. Mitchell has never thrown to a secondary receiver even when he's had plenty of time - he prefers to tuck and run. After watching Burton/Appy last night, PV had better get to where they can contain the ends. No state championships since Barry Jones left.
Just my thoughts.

Re: PV Exposed
The Barry Jones comment gets thrown around alot and I think it's bull. In 2001 PV's offense lost them the game against GC in the Regional Championshing game. We fumbled around the goal line. In 2004 when we lost the state championship we held Manassas Park to 20 points. The defense was on the field the entire game, I'd give anything to be able to go back in time and run a 3-3-5 against MP and let Patrick McKinney spy Terrell. I guess that is my football fantasy that will never happen. I dont really know anything about practices at PV because I've not been to once since I left.
