Former PV Player makes big play
Virginia Military 20, Davidson 19
LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) -- VMI's Patrick McKinney stopped Matt McGreevy's attempted 2-point conversion run with no time left Saturday as the Keydets opened the season with a 20-19 victory over Davidson.
Ryan Alexander's 5-yard touchdown pass to Beau Jones on the game's final play pulled the Wildcats within one. Instead of kicking the extra point and going to overtime, Davidson chose to go for the win on the road.
McKinney, who had a game-high 14 tackles, stopped McGreevy inches from the goal line.
The Wildcats led 10-7 entering the fourth quarter, but VMI's Sean Mizzer scored on runs of 10 and 63 yards to give the Keydets a 20-10 lead with 5:41 left.
Davidson's Brad Smith kicked a 27-yard field goal with 2:55 left, and Alexander's TD pass to Jones capped a 14-play, 75-yard drive that took the final 1:19 off the clock.
Alexander was 34-of-58 for 404 yards and two touchdowns, including a 16-yard pass to Brett Dioguardi in the second quarter. Jones, Dioguardi and Myles Potter each had 93 yards receiving.
Mizzer had 173 yards on 22 carries as the Keydets rolled up 244 yards on the ground.
VMI's Jonathan Wilson was 8-of-18 for 154 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown to Joey Robinson in the first quarter

Re: Former PV Player makes big play
Man VMI must suck. Davidson, unless they have changed recently, is a non-scholarship 1-AA program in football. Even if they have added scholarships, they still probably do not have 4 years worth since they were non-scholarship back when I was at E&H, and we used to play them.
Re: Former PV Player makes big play
Great to hear, last time I seen him he was huge. You can tell he's really putting all he has into it. The linebackers of that 04 PV team were unreal, McKinney (now at VMI), Chad Lane (made all state), Cody Plesant (All Region I'm pretty sure), and we could rotate Ethan Lopez and Luke Spurlock in there. We could flop around and move one down to DE, one of the most talent LB cores I've seen in a long time.
Re: Former PV Player makes big play
I thought the year before that with Rob Coughlin was better personally, having played against all of them. Chad Lane was way overrated IMO.
