Best baseball season ever?

Which player has produced the best season ever? I was bored tonight and went over to baseball reference and have decided to narrow it down to the 1941 season in which Williams hit .406, drove in 120 runs, hit 37 homers, pounded out over 180 hits, scored 135 runs, and had an on base percentage of .553. The other season I looked at closely was the season Bonds put up in 2001 Bonds hit .328, drove in 137 runs, scored 129 runs, hit 73 homers, was able to produce 156 hits, had an on base percentage of .516 and had a unreal slugging percentage of .863.

Personally I think Willimas season was better and more productive he made less outs and despite not having the home run numbers he was able to drive in similar runs, scored 6 more runs, and had an higher on base percentage.

Don't have the stats in front of me, but the year Orel Hershiser set the record for most scoreless innings has got to be up there. I believe the Dodgers won the World Series that year.

Didn't Maddux pass that about 4 years ago or so? If not, I know it he was very close to Orel's record.

You looked up the wrong season. Bonds 04 season was his best with his 02 season being 2nd best. 01 was not BB's best season although people seem to think so just because he hit alot of homeruns.

If you lookup the 04 season, he had a 362 average, 135runs, 132 hits PLUS 232 walks, OBP of 609, 45 home runs, and an 812 slugging percentage. With the exception of batting average, 04 Bonds is better. Of course noone has hit 400 since. Bonds was pretty close, hitting 400 in every month but he had one solid month where he batted .092. Im not sure if batting average really means that much though when your OBP is 609 which is the all time mark.

George Brett chasing .400 comes to mind. Eric Gagne's save record spanned several years. I would say the McGwire/Sosa chase, but I believe that was chemically induced.

Carew and Brett both fell short on the last day of the season. Gwynn was at .394 when the strike came in 94.

Orel was amazing in 88 no doubt about it. I would really like to have seen how many 400 seasons Williams would have had had it not been for serving in the war.

I seriously believe that Ken Griffey Jr. had a chance at the homerun mark in the strike year, as well.
