How in the world this basketball setup works? CW who is D1 in football is D2 in basketball and can not petition to move down? How do you even qualify for the Regional Tournament? Just pray to God that your not the worst team in your division? Are they going to use power points like they do football? To anybody who can answer any of these questions I congratulate you cause I personally don't have a clue.
It's basketball...so it doesn't really matter....does it?..lol j/k

First of all, there is no petitioning to play down in basketball and that's just a rule.. I copied the following segment out of the coalfield hoops preview which explains how it works.. The only thing that this doesn't mention is that the regular season champ gets an automatic bid and also the district tourney champ I'm pretty sure.. Which they would probably have enough points to make it in anyways...

Fans of two divisions in the same classification in football should be excited this high school basketball season. For the first time, the Virginia High School League will have divisional play in Group A basketball this season. Of the 23 high schools in Region D, 11 will play as Division 2 schools and 12 will be D1 schools. The teams are divided into the two regions based on their size. Division 2 teams in Region D for this year range from Lee High, the largest Group A team in the region and state with an enrollment of 797, to the smallest Division 2 team in the state in Castlewood, with an enrollment of 308. Other Region D Division 2 teams and their enrollment include Virginia High (700), Gate City (666), John Battle (641), Lebanon (570), Powell Valley (518), J.J. Kelly (505), Honaker (402), Coeburn (396) and Clintwood (328). In Division 1, Haysi is the largest Region D school with an enrollment of 280. The Dickenson County school is followed in terms of enrollment by Pound (274), Thomas Walker (250), Rye Cove (242), Appalachia (241), Twin Valley (239),
Twin Springs (237), J.I. Burton (223), Hurley (202), Ervinton (176), St. Paul (156) and Council 140.
HOW IT WORKS
The teams will remain in their districts, the Black Diamond, Clinch Mountain, Cumberland and Lonesome Pine during regular-season and district tournaments. However, when play advances to the regional tournament there will be a brand new look. Eight Division 2 and eight Division 1 teams will advance to their respective regional tournaments. The teams will be seeded in the Region D tournaments based on a point system, which awards points for where a team finished in their regular-season district standings and their district tournament. The higher a team places in its district standings and in its district tournament, the more points it accumulates. The eight teams in each division with the highest point totals advance to the regional tournaments. Teams that finish first and second in the regional tournaments will advance to the VHSL Group A Division 1 and Division 2 state quarterfinals. The state semifinals and championship for both divisions will be played at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center in Richmond.
Lets say Castlewood runs wild (which they should) and wins both the regular season and tourny title and so does GC (which they should) how do you determine who is the number one seed? It's also very possible for Honaker to do the same thing. Another question I have is where are they holding the tournament(s)? I would prefer them to be at the same place or at least have the championship game at the same place. I really think it's going to be just like last year GC/Castlewood in D2 and JIB/TV in D1. I would be really suprised if it turned out otherwise.
If you had seen Castlewood play last night you might think otherwise.. They blew a 15 point lead or so and lost to Lebanon by 7.. They just completely fell apart and Lebanon took over the game.. I'm hoping they move on from this and play like they are capable the rest of the year cause if they don't they won't make it anywhere.. But that's a good question about who would get the number one seed and I don't know the answer.. Your other question about where the tourney would be held was answered in another thread..

I'm on the fence about the two-division setup for basketball, but if you're going to do it, at least don't let 9000 teams into the tournament. Yeah, I know I'm probably beating a dead horse or preaching to the choir on this one, but can you possibly make the regular season and district tourneys even more meaningless?
It would be a lot better if only the regional champion went to the state tournament, but we all know the reason that won't happen. The VHSL doesn't want to give up the money from that state quarterfinal game.
