Powell Valley??
I wanted to post this over here to keep from all the bs.
I was reading some of the LPD predictions and saw a few people picking PV to finish last in the district. Now I have been away from the area for a while but I still try to keep up with the local teams, and for the life of me I can't remember PV ever finishing last in the district. Is the program rebuilding this year? I thought PV just reloaded every year. I realize every program goes through some "growing pains" but with Coach Robbins you can never count him out.
Some of you may not remember me, I really haven't had that much time to post, mainly I have been checking out scores and trying to keep up with all the hoop la that goes on - on the LPD forum. My wife and I had our first child last September and baby #2 is due Feb. 3 ( yeah I know I work fast lol ) So needless to say I have been a bit busy!

Re: Powell Valley??
Its just the normal idiots posting. No way PV finishes out of the top 3.

Re: Powell Valley??
Down year, but a down year for PV is still contending for LPD and regional championship. Can`t ever tell til season starts.
What was the last year PV wasnt in Regional champinship? I was trying to remember.
maybe the year GC won State? I believe PV GC played in first round instead of regional championship. 2003?

Re: Powell Valley??
that's what I was thinking just wanted to make sure, with all the talk about them leaving the spread and going back to the traditional I formation, I didn't know if some of those posters didn't know something I didn't know lol. On a side note can anybody remember PV ever finishing last in the district? I can only remember back to 92 which was my freshman year at GC, and I had moved there from Church Hill.
PV had this great little RB named Greg Bishop he was a good little ball player, I think Todd Zirkle was the QB that year.

Re: Powell Valley??
Zirkle was the qb quite a bit later than that. He was more toward 95-96ish. Bishop was a good little player though. I think his last season was 93.

Re: Powell Valley??
PV didn't play for the regional title in 02 or 03. Greg Bishop's last year was 93 and we lost in the regional title game to Haysi 14-12. As for the last time PV finished last in the LPD it was 1967 (if my info is correct, and it may very well be wrong. I have a difficult time finding accurate information before the dominating Clintwood teams of the 70's). Most people fail to remember how good PV was in the mid 70's they just never could beat Clintwood, they went 8-2 a couple times from 73-76. We've only had 5 losing season in the history of the program 4 of them coming in a row in the late 60's. While never really ever becoming a dominate program until the 80's we've always been pretty competitive. I need to find some old tapes from the 70's-82. It's fairly obvious to be that the program that was left to Robbins was a gold mine. Going back over stats, records, etc. sometimes it's frustrating as an alum for us not to have more state titles than what we have. The game against Perry Mclure in 83.... 7-3 loss where we get stood up on the goal line (if anybody has a film of this I'd love to see it). The 86 team that went 10-0 to get upset by Garden.... The 93 team with gobs of talent that just never could piece it all together. Recently the 01 and 04 teams that had state championship caliber talent and just couldn't get the job done. From a historical standpoint it's like we as a program go in droughts where we lose big close games and it seems to me that we are in one right now. If I could change two plays from last year PV would've been LPD Champs. The safety we took against CW that cost us the game 8-7 and the fumble against JIB. We wont be the most talented team in the LPD this year but it will fool me if we just roll over and play dead like many hope/think. We may even have a season like GC did a few years back where we finally miss the playoffs (however I sure hope not to me that streak is something to take pride in and really shows where your program is) but as long as there is a school standing at One Avenue of Champions in Big Stone Gap, VA they will field a very competitive football team. As long as they get a half way competent individual to coach after Robbins leaves we'll be fine. The amount of money, technology, and facilities that we have is unreal for a high school program and I never really appreciated it until I got out of the program.

Re: Powell Valley??
Zirkle was on the 93 team...and if not mistaken he was the QB
-
Re: Powell Valley??
He got moved to WR when Ryan Witt became QB in 94 correct? I know he played some QB before then but not sure how much.
-
Re: Powell Valley??
Zirkle was the best QB they had in 94 too...but he was the best WR as well...lol

Re: Powell Valley??
Zirkle was a beast and the most underrated athlete in LPD history in my opinion. If the dude played today I could only imagine what some on here would say about him.
