I?ll try again:

I found it here in the forum.
And i found an answer from Steve Mac:
"It was the 605 that EMI qualified for monitoring."
In an Altec-paper i read of the 604E to use in this cabinet . . i guess it?s too small, isn?t it? Think it?s a 612.

Re: Altec Utility Cabinet
Yes acording to those who red the book it was a 605 in a 612 cabinet. The 604 super E
was also very popular with recording studios at that time also in a 612 cabinet.
I'll try to fix that picture.

Hey Licorne!
Thanks! Do you have any idea wether they modified the xover for that smaller cab?

OK, wasn't sure if that was the one. Anyway, either adding a bit of LF boost or some baffle step compensation and shelving the HF a bit more will in theory turn it into a slightly better sounding version of the 605. That, or drive it with a high output impedance amp similar to those the original duplexes were 'voiced' with.

Hi GM!
Thanks for your reply. At the moment i use an AudioResearch D76A - which isn?t too bad with the speakers and an updated N1500A (just replaced parts - no phasecompensation) - and two switching-amps with internal xover-option using a DSP (and time-delay).
Also i use experimentally 2 EV XEQ2 (using time-delay) with the switching-amps.
That runs very well - but i was just attracted by this cabinet . . . :-)
What i always read is to stay at least with the volume of the 620 cabs - maybe i?ll apply the look of the 612 to the 620 . . ;-))
best, Klaus
Re: Altec Utility Cabinet
Greets!
You're welcome!
Basically, within reason the cab size only affects the BW below the driver's mass corner (2*Fs/Qts), so 'BIB' ('bigger is better', at least up to Vb = Vas) rules as to how wide a cab alignment's gain BW is, not to mention allows much more tuning flexibility, so if you use a 'sub' or only are interested in the human vocals BW, then you don't need a cab larger than the 612 or a tuning < its ~44 Hz.
I agree, scaling up a 612 to preserve its proportions would look kind of cool in an industrial chic sort of way. At a glance, scaling it up to an A7's 30" width increases net Vb to around 12 ft^3 if I did the math correctly.
Anyway, please post some pics, design details, performance impressions if you do it.
