Region D Tournament (somebody help me)

Disclaimer: This has been edited to reflect some information given later in the thread, it may not make total sense as I have yet to have an opportunity to proof read it. However, this is a general idea of what to expect.

We are down to the final week of the 2009 basketball season and it's really a complete mess. It is possible that not one single D2 school will earn full points for first place in their district, currently there is not an undefeated team in district play in Region D in either D2 or D1. All that does is make for a mess, at this point Appalachia and Twin Valley are going to win their districts baring a loss to a team(s) they have beaten earlier this season, (if either of these teams were to lose again, we'd have an even bigger mess). Thus, I feel it's safe to say, for this anyway that we can go ahead and award Appalachia and Twin Valley 16 points a piece for winning the LPD and BDD Regular Season Championships.
D1 Tournament Field

1 Twin Valley 16 pts

After those two schools it gets pretty interesting, and to be perfectly honest I don't keep up with Division 1 enough to really get enough to where everyone else is going to end up. The only reason I even mentioned D1 and pointed this out was to ask the question who gets the number one seed between Appalachia and Twin Valley? It's pretty key imo, D1 top to bottom is much weaker than D2, playing the 4 seed over the 3 seed could become crucial in earning a state tournament berth. My personal opinion is that Twin Valley should get it due to the insane schedule they have played, of course if Appalachia beats Coeburn on the road Wednesday Night, I really couldn't argue much if the Bulldogs were given the #1 seed. This is just a start to what I'm going to show later in this post, as to why this system is pretty flawed. There is no real true way of determining who should get that seed, the football system isn't perfect but at least we award points based on wins/losses to schools based on enrollment.

Division 2 is set in stone at this point in terms of who will get in, what isn't is the seeds. The following schools baring a district tournament championship by Clintwood, John Battle, or Lee High guarantees the following schools births in the tournament in my opinion.
Gate City
Virginia High School
Lebanon
Powell Valley
J.J. Kelly
Honaker
Castlewood
Coeburn

Currently, not one of those schools is winning their district outright. In the event of a tie, if each district has the same rules that the LPD has, you split points. Thus, you could see a three way tie in the Clinch Mountain which would give the following points: (updated via stripes info)
Three Way tie: 12.66 each

At this point all the Cumberland District can have is a two way tie, which I think will happen between Coeburn and Castlewood. Thus, giving both schools 14 regional qualification points.

So, at this point we have the following (and I'm projecting here)

Coeburn 14
Castlewood 14
Gate City 12.66
Lebanon 12.66
VHS 12.66



The Lonesome Pine will see in my opinion PV getting 12 points and JJ Kelly 10.

Honaker at this point is currently second in the black diamond thus giving them 12 points.

So, saying all that here is what my projection has, going into district tournament play:

Coeburn 14
Castlewood 14
Gate City 12.66
Lebanon 12.66
Virginia High 12.66
PV 12
Honaker 12 (no clue who they would seed here, PV and Honaker have not played)
JJK 10

The district tournaments are more important than I think most would have ever thought when they started this process. I could only imagine the argument that would take place when they do seed. Bottom line, somebody has to win these district tournaments, and honestly I think at least 2 schools up there will, and it's possibly that 3 will. That will give you 12 more points for winning the tournament. These one game playoffs they have to determine #1 seed in the district tournament will be worthless imo, you don't get any more points and if that school beats you in the district finals you'll feel like the Brides Maid. 26 points for them and 24 for you, even though you technically, imo, won the regular season. Hopefully, somebody out there in cyberspace can answer some of these questions I have.

I believe that Lebanon and GC cannot tie for the lead 2 way without VA High being upset along the way. So far those teams have all split with each other, with GC/Lebanon playing this week. If GC wins, they should lock up the CMD. If Lebanon wins, then you have a 3 way tie.

Thank you, if thats the case the rest of the D2 teams should be heavy fans of the Pioneers. It would hurt each teams regional qualification points heavily. I'll update my originial post to reflect this information. Thanks stripes.

Yeah, a Lebanon win and you get a three-way tie. A win by GC and they would win it with a win over Lee. Of course, upsets could change all that, probably the mostly likely of any in that case would be a win by Lee over GC which could create a tie between GC-Va High barring any other upsets. Battle came close against Va High the first time, probably not going to be that case next time around though.

Va High......5-2 (Losses: Gate City, Lebanon; Wins: Battle, Gate City, Lebanon, Lee (2))
Lebanon.....4-2 (Losses: Gate City, Va High; Wins: Battle, Lee (2), Va High)

Wednesday:
Gate City @ Lebanon
Virginia High @ John Battle

Friday:
John Battle @ Lebanon
Lee High @ Gate City

it will be a mess until the district tournament is settled.

The first tiebreaker in your Honaker/PV tie would be head to head. Since you stated that they haven't played, the 2nd tiebreaker is District Winning %. So whichever team has the better percentage in their district would get the higher seed. I believe tiebreaker 3 is record versus common opponents.

Does that tiebreker include district tournament games into the winning%? Thanks for the help.

I think Beamer's post answered your question. No, tourny games do not factor in.

GC won so no three way tie in the CMD, although they'll still need to beat Lee to avoid a tie with Va High.
