Thoughts from Week 1.....everybody

Everyone give a run down of their team over here that way it can be discussed somewhat maturely.

Where is the offense????? I know a lot of points were put on the board this week but from looking at the stats in the paper most teams didn't even break 300 yards of total offense when scoring 40+ points. I guess most of that could be attributed to good D and turnovers which was the case at the Cove last night. Rye Cove turned the ball over a couple of times inside their own 20 which made for easy scores and no yardage put up.

Also, how many field goals were kicked across SWVA last night. Burton had 1, Clintwood had 1, Gate City, Marion, John Battle.... more than your norm.

Burton played well last night IMO and was solid defensively, 1st team D gave up less than 50 yards and possibly less not exactly for sure, both scores came on 2nd team unit and seems like almost all yards were against them as well. Martinez will help a lot of kids from Burton score this year, I saw on one play when Martinez went into motion that 4 Rye Cove kids followed him. His impact was much more than what showed in the box score. On his first score he made a few moves that were incredible and I have no idea how he came out but it seems all 11 War Eagles were there trying to tackle him on the sidelines but somehow he came out scooted 50 yards to paydirt.

Looks like all teams in the LPD did well last night......on to week 2.

I am not sure that Clintwood started a drive outside of Coeburns 35 yard line all night LOL

Blocked 1 punt and got a peace of another alone with good return yards


After last week I was alittle worryed about our Kickoffs but last night made me feel ALOT better (I think Coeburn only made it past the 20 2 times on returns)

And to top it off we hit a 38 yard FG


I thought our tail backs (all 4 that were used) looked like ther were hitting the holes harder and our fullbacks ran hard (Dottson from the last 2 weeks looks like the real deal)


I still worry about depth an injury to a starter will be tough to overcome



As far as Coeburn goes.......damn......they are in for a tough season as much as I would like to think Coeburn is not that bad and Clintwood is just that good I am not sure that is the case Coeburn is not good on the LOS there QB is not bad but under pressure he will put the ball up for grabs....#10 has some speed but does not take a hit well......Overall I think better take care of bussness vs Ervinton next week becouse it may be the only game this year that they will go in as the Faveroits

I'm not blaming the officials for the TS loss, but that officiating crew was the worst I've ever seen in football.

Gate City

Gate City played well on both sides of the ball. Need work on the passing game but Richlands defended it well. I was very glad to see the old Smash Mouth style football back for GC. Three yards and a cloud of dust and was able to keep Richlands O off the Field. Time of possession was something like GC 30+ minutes RHS a little over 14 minutes. I dont think Richlands run the ball maybe one time if that in the second half. They might have completed 2 passes I think. Total oofense for them in the second half was probably around 30 yards. The biggest factor for Richlands was the Johnsons. I dont think they have ever been hit in the mouth like they were last night and it really showed. But if not for the Johnsons Richlands probably would not have scored at all. I think out field goal was a 26 yarder. Would write more but have to go meet someone.

Congrads to GC I really thought they would have a tough time defending the pass if they have that locked down then they very well may be the DIV 2 front runner this season

I still think it is wide open. With Bill calling the defense they can defend the pass well. The Deffensive Coordinater we had last year taught the kids not to look back when covering the pass. Too many defenders had the ball hit them in the back quite often. I do think we have a team to contend for the Region D title but the Region in Division 2 is still anybodys to win. Cant wait to see how VAHigh does against TNHigh in two weeks. Also the Lebanon @ PV game is a BIG game this week. Kelly might even sneak in and surprise us all.

Kelly would have tallied more than 321,but some stupid miscues cost us dearly. A chop block,a dropped TD pass...things that I hope we can attribute to first game jitters. To be honest,I'd hoped that TW would have tested our pass defense (something we really have to work on)out of the spread,but every time the ball was snapped,red and white jerseys swamped the backfield. We also had some silly other miscues that took points off the board. A screen pass with a mile of open field and our QB misses Baker. Not one but 2 fumbled punt retuns by Brandon Osbourne. He's a youngster,and he can fly,but he's gotta learn to squeeze the ball instead of running before he catches it. I don't think B.I. can gripe about the defensive effort last night. Holding a team to 9 yards in total offense,especially one bigger than you are is impressive (even in p-nut it is). They always say the biggest improvement in a season goes from game 1 to game 2. Here's hoping that we come out a little sharper on offense against the "Cats,as well as staying hungry on the efensive side of the ball.
