Help needed from knowledgable high school sports aficionados
I've tried my best Perry Mason defense, but without any friends or relatives in either high school administration or sports participation, I could only do so much. Anti-footballers at the DCDB forum are saying that high school football is funded at the expense of other activities such as band. I don't know whether it's partially funded or what (maybe some of you can set us straight), but I DO know that football is THE money sport in high school football and that its ticket sales funds other sports activities. There are a number of diverse opinions on the subject so it would be best to start with the first message in the thread in order to get the entire picture. Registration is NOT required, but if you DO register, no one else can use your nickname and you can edit your message within one hour of posting. The thread starts here:

At J.J. Kelly all of the programs are self-funded, band included. There are no funds allotted from the WCSB for athletics other than providing for transportation costs and coaching salaries. Football gates provide the major source of funds for the non-revenue sports.
I don't know how the people of ****enson County have allowed the Band programs to be eliminated.

They're starting a band program at the 6th, 7th, 8th grade levels I believe. So it looks like they're trying to get one going again. And it's about time. I went to high school in TN and we had about 200-250 kids in our band. I went from watching games with a huge band (a very good one at that) to games with no band at all. It's a big difference. Granted I went to a 5A school, but it's not just about the size. It's nice just to have one at all.

Yeah you should see some of the bands here in central Kentucky. Some of them like Lafayette and Paul Laurence Dunbar in Lexington have 200-250 each and are the shiz.
I'm going to college for a music ed. degree. Might see if I can get a job somewhere around home.

The link leads to a page saying, near the first-the C-wood bus broke down and the cheerleaders played JIB. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

Normally the ticket prices cover the cost of footballl and the bandboosters receive proceeds from concessions. Majority of sports are self funded for an exception of a few that sports that fail to gain a lot of support, then other proceeds go towards the cost of that sport that fails to make enough money.
Look at it this way if a team is averaging 2000 fans a game with 5 home games at 5 dollars a ticket, their earnings fo rthe season would be clsoe to 50,000.

I feel you on that one. Back in my day,the Kelly band was big,loud,and proud. They'd go to big competitions in Florida,compete against enormous bands from across the nation,and blow 'em away. To look at our band now is tough. When Patrick Henry brought their impressive Rebel Regiment to Wise this year and performed,I couldn't help but sadly think "That's how our band used to sound":(

Not sure why schools don't have bands. J. I. Burton has one of the biggest if not the biggest band in the LPD. They consistently win in competitions and go to Florida to perform as least every other year. WHY DOES BURTON HAVE A GREAT BAND? Burton has a great band director who puts hours and hours in every year to accomplish this. Also, the kids work their butts off selling fruit, candy, calendars, cookie dough, etc. That money is put into their own personal account to help pay for those trips. Also, the band boosters put lots of hours in the concession stand, enought that when these kids go on a trip, they hand each band member money to spend as they wish. That is why Burton has the band with the accolades!!!!
