Don't look now...
but Virginia Tech's baseball team is ranked #20 in the nation...first time being ranked since 1992
VT won two different series (2-1) against ranked opponents Miami who was #9 and FSU who was ranked #4
not bad for a team that was said would always be in the cellar of the ACC
the good news is they will return most of their talent next year and top 25 rankings for the football, basketball and baseball programs in the same year is a very good probability

beating FSU is a big deal, that team can really rake.

Re: Don't look now...
Tennessee's baseball program has sunk like a rock since Delmonicos release.

Re: Don't look now...
Alabama had been ranked earlier, must have lost some games recently.
Who is the best team this year Stripes/GCD?
I dont follow it closely, I do like the CWS tho.

Re: Don't look now...
UVA is still rolling, taking 2 out of 3 from GT last weekend. Hughes has gotten VT going (like to see the ACC getting stronger)

Re: Don't look now...
Its really too much of a tossup to tell IMO. One team that is usually in Omaha and is ranked in Cal State Fullerton will surprise me if they make it back. They are ranked, but dont seem to be as solid as usual. LSU returned quite a bit from their championship team if I am not mistaken, so it wouldn't surprise me a bit to see them contend.

Re: Don't look now...
I went and watched the Miami/VT series this past weekend. VT is one of those ball clubs that scratches & claws to get it done, and that's how they took Friday/Sunday. Miami had VT down 6-1 at one point Friday night, but VT came right back and put runs on the board. Same thing Sunday--Miami went up 2-0 early, then VT scattered 4 runs across the next 7 innings and won 4-2. Miami won 9-2 off of 4 homers in the Saturday game.
Their defense isn't anything special though--that's VT's weakness. They made 6 errors Friday night alone, and didn't look good out in the field, esp. at 3B. Not sure if that guy's a younger player or what but man--he looked uncomfortable out there. Their pitching isn't overwhelming, but VT's coaching staff used their pitching with the right timing and matchups. Miami's staff hasn't done that much this year at all...they got out-coached there. The Hahn kid that pitched for VT Sunday could hum the ball in the 90's consistently, but wasn't super effective until he started mixing in his curveball/change-up in with it after the 2nd inning.
VT hit four homers Friday, and I believe 2 more Sunday. They have power across the board, hit the fastball extremely well. Erickson for Miami pitched Saturday and had them crossed up pretty good with his slower stuff. On Friday/Sunday though, Miami pitched Hernandez/Santana, and both of those guys rely on the fastball more, and they paid for it around the 4th/5th inning each game.

Re: Don't look now...
Giving Delmonico the axe is one of the many blunders Mike Hamilton has made. If it wasnt for hiring Bruce Pearl, he would be out of a job by now

Re: Don't look now...
I dont think giving Delmonico the axe was a bad move. It was getting pretty stagnant in the baseball program and was underachieving for the talent they had. Im really surprised Raliegh hasn't worked out better.
