let's say you're an aspiring basketball coach...you've been given the option for a job at 3 different schools

School #1
Mid-major program in the Midwest
Head Coach has been there 7 years
20+ wins in each season he has been the HC
HC is well-connected and good friends with an Elite NBA star
City environment and 20 min from a major US city

the offer:
Graduate Assistant - which means going back to school, with tuition waiver and monthly stipend...7th man in line in terms of importance

School #2
Mid-major program on the Atlantic Coast
Head Coach has been there 1 year, has 1 national title as an Asst.
just under 30 wins last year
HC is well-connected with other coaches
city environment

the offer:
video coordinator - no school, monthly stipend...6th man in line

School #3
Division II program in the Southeast
there will be a new head coach next year, one who has been as Asst in D1
went 11-18 last year
HC is well connected in AAU and NBA
somewhat rural environment...30 min away from larger city

the offer:
Assistant Coach - yearly salary, highest paying of the 3...3rd man in line


so which would you choose?

That's an easy one IMO. Choice #3. Faster track to HC and a yearly salary. I know it isn't D1,but you gotta start somewhere.:cool:

It really depends upon your what looking for. If you are needing or wanting to get more classwork in, then #1 would be a no brainer to me. For the most part, #1 and #3 would personally seem like the front runners just depending upon whether you are looking to attend class or not. If not, I would think #3.

#3 better weather

Do not go the video coordinator route. I would go with number 1.

Route 1, a free masters degree. It's next to impossible to go anywhere in athletics with a bachelors degree regardless of the work you do. Even more true if you get into female athletics and your a white male.

the problem with school right now for me is that I want to make sure my first job is done at 100%, because that will make or break my move up the ladder...I kinda feel like going to school and doing the job will make one of the 2 suffer

all 3 have big positives and some negatives...may need to throw them all in a hat and pick one

I will just say good luck no matter what. DD is onto to something there though. A masters will always look better than the bachelors when trying to get a leg up on someone when you do compete for an opportunity to move up. I wish you nothing but the best no matter how you choose man.

I feel your pain; I have been going through something similar over the last year and have two more years to go. As somebody else said they all sound like good gigs minus the video coordinator. IMO, that job sucks, long hours and little thanks.

you could handle doing masters classes and coaching.
