I'm currently restoring a pair of 946-Bs. Since I have a small collection of drivers handy, I have tried a few different combinations with the 811 horn over the last 6 weeks including:
1. 806 (factory stock) w/ GPA frams and recharge (800 cross)
2. 902 (original fram - 800 cross)
3. 802-D w/ GPA fram and recharge - 800 cross
4. 806 + JBL 2405 slot tweeter crossed at 800 and 10K
So far, I find the 802 HF driver to be the smoothest, especially through the mid range. The 902 was a close second and it has the better high frequency response of any so far.
I have also tried each combo with rebuilt crossovers (new caps and air inductors) and, to my ear, there is no difference (improvement).
For permenant installation of an 802 in an 846B cab, the back cabinet needs to be modified for a "relief" since the 802 is deeper than the factory stock 806.
I replaced the 806's with the 902's in my 846B Valencias as well. I really like the improvement. No mods were necessary.
Mike's new GPAs were my last two pieces of horn gear after my move from a large house to a highrise by The Lake. I am now totally hornless. ;) Electrostats now.
I wonder if they'd grow back in a more accommodating environment?Quote:

Not that they'd replace the ML's, but i wonder if the dynamics and spl's of horns and large cones are occasionally missed during extended or intensive listening sessions.
Yes. The MLs have wonderful clarity, excellent tonal balance and do the big image thing but once in awhile I miss the punch of big Altecs and JBLs. But for my current place I think the stats are the best way to go.
If I moved back to a house I'd certainly be back to Model 19s. I don't see that happening though; I'm enjoying downtown living very much. But you never know.
