Altec Manta-ray horns versus the legacy Altec multi-cell and sectorial horns
Are the newer Altec Manta-ray design really superior to the tried and true legacy designs, like in terms of freq response and dispersion assuming that are rated for the same dispersion pattern?

Short answer, qualified by their intended applications, yes.
There's more to it, but my sweet corn's boiling over...

bfish: Ooppps.......
I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Those cast aluminum sectoral and soldered/sheet metal multi-cells of yesteryear were pretty expensive to manufacture. The multi-cells were hand-soldered by tinsmiths. Compared to modern horns, most of them which are molded from fiberglass or plastics are way cheaper to manufacture. I was curious if there was any sonic differences. Personally, I think the Altec multi-cells were just cool looking.
Re: Altec Manta-ray horns versus the legacy Altec multi-cell and sectorial horns
I have the only plastic multicell that Altec made (at least I know of know others) as a prototype...it wasn't as good as the metal ones, as they couldn't get the edges where the cells meet at the mouth of the throat to be sharp enough so as not to reflect sounds back up the throat.
It's for sale, if anyone's interested, by the way...so is my cutaway view of the 604-8G with the plastic case Altec had made for display purposes - not sure but that there were only 2 of them made....
Re: Altec Manta-ray horns versus the legacy Altec multi-cell and sectorial horns
Hey Todd, what's the configuration of the plastic multicell?
IMO - the multicell horns are best sounding. The others are good, the multi-cells are great.
Maybe just a matter of taste.
