OT: How are they doing this?
There are a lot of small bands posting on YouTube that are apparently recording their own music. The quality of some of their recordings (like Pomplamoose) seems to be studio quality. I can see from the video they are using Neumann mics but what might they be using for the recording?
I have not been keeping up with the latest recording equipment. Im certain its something digital. Are they recording this with a computer or is there a digital recording device?
You can see most everything they are using in the video but I am missing the recorder.

No doubt a PC based workstation. Their video editing is as tight and precise as the audio. Be sure to check out their covers of "Mr Sandman" and Lady Gaga's "Telephone".
As for the software.................... drop them an email, they're quite friendly.
I'm sure they have access to some really good "pro" help as they seem closely associated with other more mainstream artists like Ben Folds, etc....

Certainly computer based. But I've heard superb recordings done on the little portable digital recorders that sell for a few $100. Done with ribbon mics. Your Akai is only useful now as an effects box. (Tape saturation is still much loved)

I'm really just guessing Nipper. Next time i'm in the studio i'll ask an engineer for an informal video mastering tutorial. :D
My inkling is that everything is recorded in digital format, both audio and video. What can be done in terms of syncing and tweaking in a good digital PC mastering process is nothing short of miraculous.

From what I've heard they record directly into a computer then edit and mix with Pro Tools software. No need to burn to a CD because they only sell MP3s thru their own website and iTunes! They met while attending Stanford where Jack was getting a music recording and orchestration degree. While recording they document it with 2 DV cameras and Natalie edits it down to 'Video Songs' that they post on uTube. They were approached by a number of major record labels and offered contracts but they decided to stay independent and not split the profits. I'm sure they learned some things from people like Ben Folds but they were producing top quality sound even before the "pros" were offering them their recording studios.

It's simple with Pro tools. Good microphones. Good musical talent.

With today's digital gear anybody can afford quality.
But bear in mind quality and skills isn't everything. It's a matter of inspiration, quality, hard work...and a natural or learned sense of what resonates with people. There are millions of very skilled musicians living at near starvation wages, and many more at the top that are much less skilled. Lots of those at the top are only there for a short period.
Staying power takes a combination of factors, lots of others are at a lower level for years, only to catch fire.
I can cite, for instance, Bob Seger. I remember the Bob Seger System from the late 60's. Most of the industry wrote him off.
Suddenly he's a hit machine.
Steve Miller was a "one hit wonder" for years. And it wasn't even that big a hit. Of course being Les Paul's Godson didn't hurt him.
What makes a great recording? If you can bottle it name your price.

I'd only add that sometimes, for some artists it is(or was) all about being at the right place in terms of the grand scale of time.
